Keep it nice, folks.

If that horse bites me, it will get hit in the face.

Otherwise, I try to stay away from their face. But I've been known to place a well-aimed elbow into their faces if it's needed.

Willy has taken a few blows to his face for biting. He's a pesky dog that horse of mine. I'm not afraid or ashamed to say that a biting horse will get it right back in the mouth if I am quick enough. Having said that, Willy has not bit me in 3 years.

If a horse gets too grabby with their mouth ON me or tries to bite, they get a firm "NO" and a smack to the mouth. I've tapped/bumped their mouth or jaw if they are being pushy and in my space or I whirl on them and yell.

Gert has been testing my space even MORE recently (she is in her terrible twos) now that I have another mare who gets my love and attention too.. so she's gotten into quite a bit of trouble lately. A few times I've smacked her good on the mouth (for beign too grabby and pushy with her mouth).

I would have to say if the horse is putting me in danger. I had a gelding once that actually enjoyed hurting people. Hitting him did nothing I actually had to grab his face, hold, and yell to get not only his attention, but respect. After that he did not bite me anymore or paw at me. But I did have to work with the kicking...

Just yesterday my baby (and this hurts me more than him) Decided that while I was introducing him to the clippers he would rear and jump forward. I tried again He reared then got a whip. 2 taps on his nose for attention (no welts here! and he got the point.

I have worked with a few "biting" stallions too. All have thus stopped biting, but not because I smacked them to death. I earned their respect as herd leader. I think it just depends. There are some horses I would not smack for the life of me. Whether it would work or possibly there is something else I can do. I think it is discipline for the right time and place.

Yeah, agree with this 100%. I love the fact that my mare is a big puppy dog, and wants to be near me and wants the attention, but that doesn't mean she gets to dictate the space boundaries, and it certainly doesn't mean there aren't space boundaries.

Hmmm, glad the poll doesn't show who voted for what. That's a nice touch.

Joins lvmypnt with caramel popcorn and the classic Dr. Pepper. (yep on docs orders)
