Your horse.....is it asleep or dead?

I just came in from feeding and Dolly was laying down, completely laid out right next to the bale of hay. All of the other horses were walking over her or around her to eat. She just laid there and didn't move. My heart skipped a beat and I held my breath for a minute and watched her. No movement. So, I call her name. Still no movement! Of course, I go into the pen and walk up to her, expecting the worst. It is still pretty dark out, so I can't see good enough to see if she is breathing, but the whole time, she still hasn't moved. Now, I'm getting scared, and don't want to know if she is dead. I muster the courage to reach down and touch her sides, to see if I can feel if she is still breathing. Suddenly, she jumps up and scares the heck out of me, just as much as I scared her! LOL Guess she was just sleeping VERY SOUNDLY!!!

Whenever you see your horse(s) laying down all stretched out, do you stop what you are doing and watch them for a minute to make sure they are OK, or do you just walk on by, without giving it another thought.

I'm paranoid about something happening to them, so I always have to stop and make sure that they are not.......well, you know......checked out.

Ever hear the term 'let sleeping horses lie' ? well its dogs yes but......... Gawd that was funny when you both got a jolt ROFL. Thanks for the giggle.
Its sleeping weather now. Just yesterday Ken came back from hunting and his truck was in the driveway but I saw him walking back from the pasture - seems Dreamer had the same sickness as your horse.
LOL
Most times I ignore it and go about my business. Its those single ones that do that - that give you the scare.

Pago did the same thing to me one day. He had laid down and gotten up a few times so I was concerned he had colic. No, he was fine. Look out a while later and he is flat out just off the veranda area. I opened the very noisy door, he didn't move. I called his name, he didn't move. I went down stairs to him and called his name, he didn't move. I touched him and he leapt up with a big fright. I nearly had a heart attack.

I keep expecting old Minty to have checked out though.

Yea....usually if there are two or more laying down, I'll make a mental note in my mind about it, but will go on about my business. It's just when it's that lone horse laying all stretched out among the other horses that I get worried. LOL

Next time that happens, I'll take a stick and stand back and poke. She scared the daylights out of me!!!! LMAO

Yup, I have.

It is such a strange position to see them in.
All layed out and completely down.
When they spend most of their lifes standing up.

When I do see that, I take that moment to go and lay up next to them, right into their tummy.
Nice spot

Yes, My heart has been made to work double-time every now and then when I've seen a horse laying flat out during weird circumstances. But when I've actually found them dead I've known it from a distance - no question.

Funny, yesterday while my husband was out at the barn he saw Grady out in his field... stiff as a board... he said he did a double take... and went to go check on him... then Grady lifted his head... seems he was down for a nice nap in the sun, with all four legs sticking straight out!

That is my biggest fear, I always check, even though my horses are fairly young, oldest is 9.

Raps did that to me once, 4AM, out of the barn, flatout in the dirt. Uncooperative when I tried to get him up, and laid right back down when I did manage to get him back in the barn. Never did figure out what was bothering him, had the vet come out at a civil hour AM. But I remember thinking 'Id lost Shen mos/yr previously, I cant lose Raps now/yet.'
..And later "Im glad hes healthy, cuz Im gonna 'kill him' for doing that to me".
