Young horses..?

Ive own a 4yr old now almost five yr old horse.. named Pilgrim. He is very sweet. Whenever you get off of him after riding, he will follow you everywhere. He is a shy horse. But sometimes in the pasture he acts very stupid.. tries to run under trees and run back.. wont leave sometimes.. just new things all the time.. But I never let him do these things but its very annoying. Hes well trained and does great in the arena. Turns good, stops good.. everything... but acts different sometimes in the pasture..sometimes he is great in the pasture. Alot of people say its because he is so young and that he will be better when he is older.. Is this true?

Could be a ton of reasons why he would act that way. He could be feeling fresh and want to go, go, go. Is your pasture far from the stable? Maybe he's barn sour and wants to get home. Could be a respect issue. Lots of things.

I wouldn't blame it on his age, as horses are all different. I know 3 horses ages 1-4 years old that are so laid back people think they're either in their 30's or about to die. He may be immature mentally at that age, but his actions shouldn't be.

I'd look into some of those other things first. Could be in pain, but I wouldn't think so if he wasn't showing it all the time.

I wouldn't worry about it at all.

I have a 13 year old horse who acts just plain stupid at times. Running around, running under the shed, then running back out. Chasing the other horses. I don't worry, he's just playing.

I would just let him be, it may just be his personality to be goofy and have fun in pasture. He's probably just burning off excess steam.

I honestly think its just because hes a kid still..

My mare did this up untill she was 6, just because she enjoyed playing and horsing around. She still chases horses just for the fun of it. Honestly, unless you see some clear issue of pain or something very strange going on, other than him acting a little "strange" or rambunctious in the pasture, I wouldn't worry about it. Just work him hard during your lesson times and he will be fine.
A little play never hurt anybody..IMO
