You want to know why colored breeders get a bad rap?

Because of this statement I found on a breeding/sales website, regarding a cremello colt:

Quote:
Such stallions are good for breeding, because the offspring will always be the color of the mare. Because of a Cremello’s two diluted genes, it cannot pass along its color. But its other physical qualities, such as muscular strength, can be passed on.

Fortunately it appears that the colt grew up to be quite breeding worthy, but more often that not, that isn't the case.

Was your point that they get a bad rap because they will forgo overall quality for color or they get a bad rap because they are ignorant?

This statement isn't true!:

The only time the offspring will be the color of the mare, is if the mare herself is a double dilute. Everything else will be the color of the mare diluted!

Taking the statement literally.

LOL, mostly about the point that his color is what makes him good for breeding. I know LOTS of colored breeders who don't know squat about the genetics of color, so I just shake my head and try to ignore that part

I know the baby isn't always the color of the mare because I have a beautiful palomino mare that came out of a dark buckskin mare. I don't know what color daddy was. Sunny turned out OK anyway.

I don't know anything about genetics but I know if you breed for color it is a toss of the dice. If you expect a certain color you will be disapointed most of the time. You breed for quality and hope for color but quality is more important.

Jennie, the thing about a cremello (or perlino, or smokey cream) is that you're GUARANTEED to get at least a single dilute from any breeding - palomino, buckskin, smokey black - because cremello and the other 2 are double dilutes - a dilute WIL be passed on. That's why these guys are so attractive to colored breeders, and that's why many of them breed them - they look at ONLY the color, because color is a hot seller. If it was a homozygous tobiano colt, the same thing happens - "ohhh, he'll ALWAYS throw spots, let's keep him a stallion and breed him!".
