I am going to put my mare mane into pasture braids once the nasty temps hit and stay. I was wondering how often you need to take them out and rebraid and also if it rains and really soaks everyone down do I need to unbraid to let it ait out then rebraid once the hair is dry or just basically keep an eye on it. Also thinking about the tails if they are braided should they be wrapped in someway or just braid and leave them? Want to stat working on the ponys tail so he is ready for 4H next year, easier to start now then panic later! Thanks

I never ever touch my mares mane unless I wash her then I carefull brush her mane and tailout. For her tailI do a braid starting below the dock of her tail and it goes about halfway down her tail so she can still swat at flies and there's less chance of it getting tangled up on the brush in her pasture.

I don't touch mane's or tails, at all when I'm not showing. The year before last, I would brush out my horse's manes and tails every day to get out the knots and all that, thinking that would help them grow. Boy was I ever wrong! Last year, I didn't touch them AT ALL unless it was after they were conditioned and covered in detangler. Then I would careful comb/brush them out. The huge amount of growth I got from my horses was crazy. My gelding's tail drags on the ground and my mare's is pretty darn close to it too. If it gets really really muddy here, I just put them in a loose braid and tuck it under so they don't drag the ground. Other than that, no touching for me.

I rebraid and recondition my mare's mane once a week. I have found that if I leave them in longer, more hairs come out. As for the tail - absolutely work below the dock - her tail is in two braids and I have to double those back up and wrap with electrical tape (below the dock) - reason why is that her tail drags the ground.

Thanks all. Ive never done the braids before and so I had to ask. Her mane and tail are pretty long anyway but her mane get the dreds in it and her poor neck gets so sweaty! My daughter wants to show her for 4H next year so I thought Id better get some info now.
