panty hose works wellalso..WE have cut the appropriate length off of a pair and pulled it up over the wrap. The fastened it over the withers..

Also a VERY good method.

Can also use tights, or a pair of thermal underwear bottoms, use one leg for over wound area, and split other leg to take over withers/under neck. They make extra tall ones for men, that have incredible long legs, and they aren't that expensive and wash well. Can find them at thrift stores too very cheap.

They also make them for "fluffy" people in like 5x, so would have plenty of fabric to work with.

And have rigged things out of old sweatsuits too.

I have a feeling there may be a lot of husbands asking "Honey have you seen my thermal underwear?"

Better a naked man, than an unprotected wounded horse.

Spider bandages are good because they have a little give to them... so your horse can still comfortably bend his knee. If your going with a regular bandage or spider, put a standing bandage on the lower half so the top bandage doesnt/cant slip down.

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone! We have a vet coming out tomorrow to look at the magically not lame, injured horse. We'll see what the verdict is.

Verdict: Torn muscle.

We have found something uncomplicated that works (depending upon the size of the wound, if there is one for your horse). If you stack wrap (wrap lower leg, then knee), then wrap the top with Elastikon (sticky gauze tape), then another wrap on the upper (we're using two wraps on the upper, so three layers; elastikon, wrap 1, wrap 2). It's been staying up pretty nicely. I rewrap every day just to make sure everything is going well, but if I didn't have to, I wouldn't need to.

That can get pretty expensive, it would seem.

I'm glad you found a method to work for him and hope he recovers well .

Actually, it wasn't all that expensive because he narrowly missed completely tearing the muscle. Only (ONLY?!) $180.

My filly injured herself yesterday and tore open her RF at the cannon bone, laid open 5 inches of flesh. She, also, missed hurting herself in the extreme. No severed tendons, and narrowly missed her ankle joint. The hole that you can see in the first picture is her bulging through a hole in the flesh. Her bill is $750+. I'm very impressed with the vet's handiwork. Not so impressed with the bill.
