Wrapping the Tail

I've seen several threads on wrapping the dock with vet wrap and such, and how it's very bad for the tail etc etc. I wanted to wrap the top of Bo's tail the night before our show so that the hair on his dock would lay flat. Vet wrap has been ruled out because i've heard about the many risks involved, so I thought maybe I could wrap it with a polo wrap. Not too tight or anything, just enough for it to stay on there overnight and then I would take it of in the morning upon arrival of the show.

Is this idea safe, and would it work?

Professional's choice makes a tail protector that should work for what you are wanting to do and they are only like 20 at the most I think

lamoo, you CAN use Vet Wrap, just make sure it's that AM before the class and it's just tight enough to keep from slipping. Paint halter people do it all the time!

$20 is a little expensive for me, since I would only be using it like a couple times a year. Thanks for the reply though.

Oh! That makes sense. I guess i'm just so worried to do it after hearing all the horrible stories. But now that I think about it, I guess I don't see the harm in it if it's done that morning and not to tightly. Thanks.

I've used VetWrap overnight before, just make sure it's only snug enough to stay. Keep it nice and loose when wrapping, just wrap it several times around so it stays. We do this when we breed the mares, that way their tails are still wrapped up when they go for breeding two days in a row.

i would think a polo wrap would be fine...we use it when we do the breedings and all...so it should be fine

I use vetwrap the morning of the show all the time. While Im getting Skip ready, after Im done w/ his tail, I wrap it right around the top. Sometimes I spray it with a little hair spray first, comb the hair down, and then wrap just the top a few times to make Skips tail mullet less noticeable.

The reason it can be bad is that if you are vetwrapping the tail, and you wrap around the dock, and leave it for a long time it can cut off circulation to the tail.

You're fine using vetwrap.

I use an Ace bandage, can reuse, wash and keep for years, and cost less than four dollars, just wrap masking tape around it to cover fasteners.

Ive used Vet wrap, and the bandage wraps on docks before shows.. overnight too.
Never witnessed my horse in discomfort at all, and everything is fine...

Thanks for the replies guys. So I guess it is fine to use, if I just use my common sense, lol.
