Wound Care – Super Glue, Krazy Glue

I was wondering if any one has tried using superglue or crazy glue to close any wounds (flesh wounds) in any emergency situations when no Vet was available and stitches may/probably have been needed.

It actually works very well. I will defintly be putting it in my first aid kit.
I had never heard of it before so I did a quick search and found this article.

The products are very similar to the tissue glue used to close skin after surgeries. However, you need to be very very careful when closing up a wound with it because if you haven't cleaned it thoroughly you set the stage for a nasty abcess.

I have not used it on horses, but have used it on myself with good results.

I haven't tried it on myself - Unless, you include gluing my fingers together. I think I have mastered that one .

I've never tried it, but I will certainly take it into consideration the next time one of my critters decides to give themselves a little flesh wound!!!

As Ryle stated, it is fine to use and does work well....however if that wound is not cleaned out properly then it may/will get infected, abcess....and a round of antibiotic would be advicable.

Just be careful when you take the bandages off, the glue can stick to them and you can reopen the wound.

It is best to use an antibacterial wash....if you dont have that, then Rosemary..(the herb) made up into a tea, is fantastic to use....it is a natural antibiotic and antibacterial herb....internally and externally.

If the wound is large, then you really need to get the wound vetted.

A small container of betadine or chlorhexidine solution would be wonderful to carry along on a trail ride for cleaning wounds. Either product can be diluted in a bottle of water and used to flush out wounds.

We've used superglue for woulds for years -- mostly smaller ones (for any larger ones, we've always had a vet come in). It works great! I had a mare tear a square patch of skin from her rump (caught on something and the square corner was just hanging there). We cleaned it well (it wasn't very deep) and glued it -- not even a scar now.
