Sandy, there was no hay in the pasture again last night...I had to drop a bale in there, and today when I ran over at lunchtime, THE GATE WAS OPEN AGAIN!!! So lets see...that's empty water troughs twice, no hay twice, and open gates twice...all in a matter of weeks. Yup, I've had it. He's going to live on a hunting preserve (at a safe distance from the "action"). I won't have the "nice" stuff...no rings to ride in, just an empty pasture and 200 acres of fields and woods, but the people who own the place are friends of a friend and Traveler will be well cared for. I'll trailer out for the good stuff now that I have our loading problem under control....and I'll have the money to do it since my board drops from $400/mo for pasture board to $250/mo. AND there is a stall there for when we want to use it or when the weather gets bad. If I muck it, board stays $250. If I want them to muck it, it goes up to $300. |

Praziquantal is the tape med Fenbendazole has not been shown effective against tapes. Why is there a "missinformation" on tapes? because the other worms that lived in the gut basically "Took over" and tapes didn't have a chance to settle in. Now that we have been destroying the other worms, doctors are finding out that tapes are taking over at an alarming rate because Lo and behold....none of the drugs actually GOT tapes. The other worms prevented tape infestation. Praziquantal currently has the highest, almost 100% kill rate. (Some articles say 100%...but nothing is ever 100%)

the label flat out states... Q: What equine parasites is Safe-Guard Paste effective against? A: Safe-Guard dewormer, with fenbendazole, is very effective against the typical adult equine parasites (i.e. ascarids, pinworms, Strongylus vulgaris, S. edentatus, S. equinus and small strongyles (L5)). honestly this scares me for double dosing Side effects associated with Safe-Guard® (fenbendazole) Paste 10% could not be established in well-controlled safety studies in horses with single doses as high as 454 mg/lb (1,000 mg/kg) and 15 consecutive daily doses of 22.7 mg/lb (50 mg/kg). Particularly with higher doses, the lethal action of fenbendazole may cause the release of antigens by the dying parasites. This phenomenon may result in either a local or systemic hypersensitive reaction. As with any drug, these reactions should be treated symptomatically. Why chance it when there is a better drug out there that has been proven. If fenbendazole could even COMPETE, even at a higher dose, dont' you think they would grab and run with it instead of losing out to a new drug?

Ok, a couple of points: 1. Double dosing pyrantel (strongid) is very effective against tapeworms There have been multiple studies on this. That is why the new product "Tape Care" has been recently approved for sale to treat horses for tapeworms. Where you have problems with pyrantel is in treating strongyles due to resistance from years of use. In the south, a recent study showed resistance on 50% of the farms tested. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/q...=pubmed_docsum http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/q...=pubmed_docsum http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/q...=pubmed_docsum 2. Safegard (Fenbendazole) is not effective against tapeworms. And if you are in the southern states there is a very good chance that fenbendazole is not even effective against the other parasites anymore. A recent study showed that there were resistance problems with fenbendazole on 95 % of the farms tested in the south. The misinformation on tapes and fenbendazole comes from the fact that it is effective against tapeworms in some species, however horses are not one of those species. 3. Praziquantel is safe and effective against tapeworms. Currently it can only be purchased in combination with ivermectin or moxidectin because praziquantel ONLY kills tapes. 4. Due to resistance issues, having both fenbendazole and strongid in your rotation is not a good idea as you could be getting an inadequate kill for 2/3 of the year. This could lead to problems with encysted parasites, heavy parasite loads and colic from both of those. One or the other should be used in your rotation schedule but not both and you should have fecal egg counts performed after using either product to ensure that it is effective and that you don't have parasite resistance issues. Your deworming program needs to be designed for your area of the country and specific situation. Contact your vet an ask what he/she recommends for you circumstances.
