I worm my mare twice a year (november and may)
She is pregnant now and I know there are plenty of wormers not suggested for pregnant mares.
I wormed her in November with Strongid P (she was pregnant at the time) and I'll be worming her in May which is just over a month before her due date - What wormer would you suggest I use?

I really don't know which de-wormer to use on a preg mare.

Well the vet told me Strongid P was the safest one to use on pregnant mares. But I like to rotate - I can use it again. And I was also told that she should be wormed and vaccinated prior to delivering.
But if no one knows I will just talk to the vet - just wanted to see what you all thought! wink

Yes, pregnant mares must be dewormed during pregnancy. Especially late pregnancy as the mares natural resistance against parasites is lowered.

Any paste dewomer is suitable for pregnant mares. Try panacur paste! It is proven safe for pregnant mares. If you feel uneasy, talk to your Vet.

We've got quite a few wormers over here that aren't approved for pregnant mares. Don't know if you all have them over there and they're already approved or if we have some that you all don't. I'd say since your vet recommended the first one, just ask him if there's another he'd recommend.

Panacur is Fenbendazole and it is definitely safe for pregnant mares. Also known as safe guard.
But yes, ask your Vet if you are worried.

Equimectrine is safe for pregnant mares. That's what we use. Check with your vet if you are unsure.

Pregnant mares should be de-wormed right after they foal(that is what we do). If you do not give a daily wormer then aren't you supposed to de-worm more than twice a year? On eof the schedules that I have it say to de-worm in March, June, September and December. We don't use that schedule because we give a daily de-wormer and we only have to paste twice a yead(spring and fall). All of our horses under the age of 1 get paste de-wormed once every month until they reach the age of 1 year old. Try to find a safe de-wormer for your mare and I would suggest de-worming her reguslarly, but also after she foals(if not de-wormed already that month).

I have never worked, boarded or ridden at a barn that has de-wormed more than twice a year(and I've been at a few barns). The only time I have heard about the monthly de-wormers and other programs are in magazines and on the forum. All the vets in our area just put them on a 6 month program (getting done twice a year) and I have yet to hear of any farms in my area having a parasite problem - perhaps the worming programs have to do with location?

I know I have wormed with Pancure at some time or another (I keep everything on reccord so I will have to take a look!)

I'm not too worried about de-worming her - I will check into it with the vet (which one he feels it the best) But I'm glad to have your input!

It depends where you're located how often you need to worm. If you want to be safe, all you need to do is have a fecal done. If you have worms, you either need to change what you're using (or when you're using it) or worm more often.
