Worming Mare Before or After Foaling

My worming schedule is set up to worm 1 week before foaling. I was just reading on another site about worming just after foaling to prevent foal scours.

Anyone have any thoughts on this.

I like to worm my mare a week before she foals. Because foals will eat the mares poop, this will help prevent the foal from getting worms. Usually the foal get the scowers becuase the mare comes into heat and produced richer milk. Atleast thats what my vet told me.
Yeah, I guess you were riding, until you fell off.

The site I was on suggested that the scours were due to strongyles upsetting the new bacterial flora in the foals gut--not due to increased hormones in the mare.

but if you worm 1 week before foaling, how many strongyles can there be?

I have always heard hormones caused richer milk which caused foal heat scours. pulling grain from mare helps a lot and I dont see how it would help if it were worms causing them.

I personally would worm before foaling.

Got this off of equine-reproduction.com. Posted by Jos:

Strongylus westerii... the larvae are transferred to the foal in the mare's milk unless she is dewormed using an Ivermectin product within the first 24 (preferably 12) hours after foaling.

It has something to do with the increased pressure on the instestines during the birthing process. Yuck.

Not that I'm cynical about internet sources but did she post any sources for that information? (I'm at work and can't google, just sneak around HGS)

Horses here are on individual turnout most of the winter and a regular worming schedule yet foal heat scours still happen and generally disappear with 48 hours of grain being pulled if not sooner. hormones and bacteria just seem far more likely than worms being popped out by contractions.

PS I was reading the equimax safety testing leaflet and testing was something like triple dosing pregnant mares daily for a month and documenting sideaffects (which were trivial). Basically the dangerous dose is extremely high. I'm sure it wouldn't matter if you wormed a week ahead and the day of foaling if you wanted to.

I always de-worm my mares within 24 hours after foaling. If I am scheduled to de-worm with in a couple weeks of the mares due date (like I am with our first mare due) I will just wait and she will get that de-wormer after she foals.
