Thumbs down Winter Coat, still there.

Well, it is pretty sad really. My APH, Casper still has much of his winter coat, if not all of it. And he looks like it is winter too. Personally I hate winter coats on horses, I think they just look so much neater, and cleaner with out one, especially for show. I won't be having a show until June I don't think. Maybe the end of May, and I don't want him to have his winter coat still there, and for us to look silly. It is really strange too, because my old mare, has almost completely shedded out, and I haven't seen brushed her much, if at all. I brush/curry Casper daily. Along with daily exercise, I just don't understand. Is there anything I can do to speed up the process of losing the coat? With out having to buy some supplement or special feed. And he also has an indoor stall, attached to a outdoor run, so he he out in the sun almost all day, and he goes out to pasture for a bit too. He also is being fed a quarter of corn oil, and gets grain called Safechoice, idk if that grain helps with coats, but it is suppose to provide them their proper nutrition. I might post some pictures of him on here, but I'm not sure if you'll be able to tell from pics. Thanks guys! I'll also try to take some more pictures today.

winter coat, visiably still there.

I want to get here....

I've never clipped a horse before. Not sure how that would turn out haha. I'd like to try another way, but thanks for the idea, and taking time to help.

you might could try a Slick N Easy grooming stone, they are fairly inexpensive and do a good job.

Slick N Easys are very good for shedding out. Just don't step on them, you'll have a little grill brick explosion. (they pop then crumble away)

How old is Casper? He doesn't LOOK old, but if he IS older, he may shed out more slowly.

Also, when is the last time you wormed him?

If he usually sheds out by now, and the weather has been 80 and you groom him regularly, then something MIGHT be up. Not shedding out the winter coat is a symptom of Cushing's disease, along with drinking a lot of water and going off the feed. However, those coats are usually long and shaggy and gross.

And Casper looks quite healthy.

Some horses just take longer. Clipping is an option but it makes the coat a bit dull, IMO. Try blanketing him in the winter, and a light stable sheet when he is indoors in the spring. You could also put a light in his stall, but really all that is just vanity. His coat looks very healthy.

(jeez I'm a rambler today)

Casper is 10. But my mare who is shedding out tons, is 23. lol. We actually wormed him on 4/12/06. And thnx for the advice and comments. He is a pretty healthy horse, and his coat is shiny, I think the corn oil is helping with that, but hmm I've never really dealed with Cushing disease. And he has been drinking alot of water, but I've been putting a bit of salt in his grain. can anyone give me more info on Cushing?
