oh yay another celebrity jumping on the idiot wagon without knowing a thing about the situation. Just what we need When will people bother to actually EDUCATE themselves on the real facts of horse slaughter and get away from this "dont kill the pretty horsies" mentality. The world would be a lot better place if people could just be more objective and realistic about things.

Smile

What I did was email him the "other side"...
I told Mr. Nelson that I admired his standing up publically for something that he believed was wrong.....and that I respected his opinion.....BUT....
As a fellow "Horse Owner" and "Horse Lover," I did want to provide him with some additional information for him to think about.
Then I proceeded to share the information, link to the report and the questions and problems Bill H.R. 503 will create.....that we have discussed on this forum.
I said that I realized that the odds that Mr. Nelson would actually read my email were great but that I did hope that someone on his staff would print it out as well as the report and hopefully see that he was at least made aware of the negative side of Bill H.R. 503.

When we see a celebrity coming out in support of something like Bill H.R. 503 we need to at least try to let them know why we happen to disagree with them and do so in a nice way that informs and educates.....who knows......sometimes it just might reach them.

Just because a celebrity says something, doesn't make it right.

Hooves of VARIOUS animals do go into the "gelatin" makings.

Not many dog foods today carry horse byprodcuts...but there are still around. Not as a "majority" of the feed. But as byproducts to fill in nutritional gaps and such inexpensively.

However, most horse byproducts are shipped overseas, including hooves. There are some byproducts that stick around here, and land in animal food as a general byproduct. Like Dallas Crown. They don't just slaughter horses. They also do exotics. Ostriches, Emus, etc. So the horse byproducts get mixed in with them, and sold as a "general" by product.

When you have your horse picked up for rendering, some renderers will salvage what they can from the carcass. Like hooves. But there isn't a huge demand for horse hooves as a whole.

As for Willie.....he isn't stupid, nor un-informed. And he doesn't do things JUST for publicity. He gave a bunch of funds to the Panhandle that I never saw ever hit the news.

He does a lot of things for "selfish" reasons, but to good causes. to cover his *** in taxes mostly. That is what ANY Celebrity gives money away for. Or give free concerts for. Tax breaks. But at least they do it legally and for a good cause.

I don't think that we can assume he is uneducated. Seeing as he is a celebrity, he has quite a bit to lose if he supports an issue he knows nothing about. Whether right or wrong, celebrities have a lot of pull on issues which they can (and do) use to support something they believe in. Bringing attention to this issue, as he is doing, will only help make sure that the bill is evaluated fully regardless of whether it passes.

And yet still celebrities support PETA and other terrorist organisations without ever realising the true nature of the groups they are supporting. If he is for banning horse slaughter at this point in time he is uneducated on the matter as you have to be completely blind to the negative consequences that a ban would bring about if carried through right now in order to support an immediate stop to horse slaughter.
