Will anything help that "dull" body clipped hair?

Okay - I am going to body clip my horse for show season (which starts up in a month). I have NEVER body clipped him because I don't usually show until late summer, and he doesn't drop all of his hair until around June (he's been shedding for over a month now and he still has TONS of hair ) A friend of mine (who has body clipped A LOT of horses in her many years of doing jumpers & fox hunting... plus the grey horses she has owned ) has offered to do it for me, which is great because I've never body clipped and I don't want my horse looking like a road map *lol*

Anyway... you know how the coat gets that dull "orangy" look (my horse is a very red chestnut) - is there anything I can do to help it to grow in better & be shinier? I have some Ultra hot oil and was thinking about bathing and hot oiling him after clipping - will that help? Is there anything else? I just don't want him to look too weird His coat right now is really shiny - I just don't want him to look dull from the clipping, ya know?

Thanks for the help!!

i think if you bath the horse after clipping, it will help. Also, mix together 1 part baby oil to, i think, 3 parts water and sponge it all over the body to replenish the natural oils...maybe it is more water LOL...not sure. I heard about that somewhere LOL

Mayonaise bath. After you clip, bathe him, then put mayonaise on him. If you can, put plastic wrap over it (yes, it takes a lot of plastic wrap!) or one of his blankets. Put him outside in the sun, where the mayonaise can heat up and really sink into his coat, for at least an hour. Then bring him in and rinse him off. I would follow with a hot oil treatment as well.

A horse that receives proper nutrition shouldn't ever look dull after body clipping. We've clipped a LOT of horses, from Cremellos and Grays to Bays, Sorrels, Duns, Blacks, etc. They've all had a very nice sheen afterwards Personally, I'd recommend using Healthy Haircare Moisturizer after clipping. Baby oil can cause them to "bleach" out some when they're outside.

A good washing and a couple of days of growth should do the trick...especially if you cut off a bunch of winter woolies ...they tend to be more dull looking. Wheat germ oil also will make a coat nice and shiney in about a week. But, I think a good bath will make a big difference

Wow, that's a lot of mayo and plastic wrap. That must be kinda gross... Sorry, I don't have anything constructive to say, I was just...wow... that's pretty gross.

It's incredibly gross and smelly but it works. Leave it the Arab industry to find a way to make their horses shine, no matter how absurd or gross it may seem.

I am going to ditto the Mayonaise (sp?) suggestion.

A lady I know did that, took pictures before the bath and after the bath and there was a HUGE difference in her fillies coat.
