Wild Horse adoption in Il I told you about

Here is the AD from Illinois Horse Online for the wild horse auction that comes to Illinois every year. I mentioned this in Crazi4horses2 thread on the subject. It links to the BLM eastern states site so it always seems legit anyways

Wild Horse Adoption in Ewing, IL
Description
The Bureau of Land Management-Eastern States maintains a wild horse holding facility in Ewing, IL which is 30 minutes south of Mt Vernon, IL and will be opening the facility for a wild horse and burro adoption event on 19 and 20 February, 2005. There will be more than 100 horses available for adoption. This is an opportunity for citizens to acquire a wild horse for a very reasonable adoption fee ($125.00) and be the owner of an "American Legend". For additional information and you can call 800-370-3936 or visit the web site at http://www.es.blm.gov and visit the Wild Horse page on the site.

Thank you.

Heres a link to the site it is advertised on right now-

Sher, I read about that one. I hope they have a good turnout & a lot of those horses find good homes. I'm VERY pleased with our new guy. We named him Joker. He's very smart & open to everything we've done so far.

Where and WHY are they catching these wild horses?

This is what ****** me off. They are wild. I think they should be left alone. Probably capturing them for "progess" developement. If they truely thought of them as a piece of legend they would help preserve them and their land and lives as wild horses.

Sea HA what IRRITATES me are people who do NOT educate themselves about the ferral horses (Wild horse is actually a mis-used term, there are not truly wild horses, remember horses were NOT indiginous to N. America until teh Spaniards 'discovered' teh Americas and brought horses with them) and how they are being managed.

IF you do NOT control population SOMEHOW (and I prefer adoption over euthanization as the first option along with Birth Control) the horses that are on public lands will eat not only themselves out of habitat, but all the rest of the NATIVE species... Please spend some time reading about what exactly IS involved with herd management before you go off on a program that at least tries to preserve the life of the horses AND maintain viable herds of 'wild' (ferral) horses at the same time.

AND what do I know about it??? I own a BLM adopted mustang. I've spent alot of time speaking with the BLM HMA director for our region... it's one HECK of a task they face to balance everything out and keep the lands and ALL species on the lands in a healthy, viable state.

The wild horses come from herds in OR, CA, NV, UT, WY mainly. Go to the blm website and spend some time educating yourself on the topic prior to commenting on it. Management via adoption process is a better program that starvation and devastation of native populaces. Remember wild horse herds reproduce at a rate of 20% per year and have VERY FEW species higher up the food chain that can bring down anything more then the weakest, youngest, oldest, sickest members of the herd.

You go girl! Well said! I too own one of these horses & am VERY glad we adopted him. As Wyld said, please spend some time educating yourself before you go off on a tangent about how "cruel" it is.

Try this link... www.wildhorseandburro.blm.gov That's probably the easiest place to start. You should be able to click on each region to read about the different HMA's (herd managment areas) and most of teh BLM sites for each region also have the BLM's mandate for how it is to manage that entire specific region... LONG, dull reading, but helps one to understand ALL of teh different things each area has to be managed for.
