Question Why would you do it?

Rummaging I found myself on someones Stud site.

They are standing a 2yo colt, with no record and in my eyes ugly, for the great fee of $300. It isn't even a 2yo yet.

It has no show record, if they try to break it they may find it would be better suited to a bucking string. They do have their mares shown on their pages, none of which I would be putting in MY paddock. Too many conformation faults.

They also offer horse breaking, training, travelling. The pictures of them riding look worse than Sam on a horse.

Their picture of their "Stallion" shows a horse that is seriously lacking in farrier care. (Wonders if they can't pick it's feet up for a farrier or if they don't know that farriers are part of owning a horse)

Why would anyone in their half a right mind even think that breeding to their "Stallion" or entrusting their horse to their care would be a good plan?

Am I just fussy? Whilst I know the perfectly conformed horse has yet to be born why would you breed such badly conformed horses?

Just because you can build a web site, doesn't mean you should be breeding horses. I have seen some pretty bad ones too, and I don't even have the "eye" to see good horses. But these were so bad, even I could see they were bad.

Well since we only have your word to go on we have to assume its all by your standards. Why? Because their not the same standards yours are, that may be a good thing from both sides and it may be a bad thing from both sides we really don't know.

As far as breeding a two year old stallion I'm a big beleiver in doing so to find out what he can produce. So often I see people stick a bunch of money and training into a stallion then find out a few years later he can't produce decent foals. Then they keep breeding with him anyway because they have so much money invested in him. Makes more sense to me to breed them at two and if they don't like the foals geld him and move on to the next stallion to promote.

I don't disagree with breeding a two year old stallion--but only if he has the bloodlines and conformation and potential.

However, many less experienced horse people seem to think, "Hey, he's got fuzzy plums, he's cute, how 'bout we breed him?" And how can we help prevent stuff like that happening? By not breeding to anything that's not quality.

But its the same old thing round and round. Who gets to decide " quality " not everyone will agree what it is thank goodness.

I think I should decide. Everyone send me your pictures and I'll let you know if you can breed it or not.

For those that are not sure. I am joking.

LOL Thats exactly the way so many people actually think and why I can never take these deals very seriously. I've yet to ever meet a person that didn't feel they had a good reason to breed the horse they were breeding. All otherr opinions are very meaningless.

Actually, I believe that "quality" is something that can be identified. A horse that has good or exceptional bloodlines and conformation is quality in mine--and many horse peoples' eyes.

However....to contradict myself, people wouldn't be marketing unproven, low-quality stallions if people wouldn't pay to have a foal out of them.

But why? Regrettably, I don't know a whole lot about the breeding world... but why would someone pay to have a foal out of something, when for a few hundred more dollars, they could have something much better?

Because some people don't care about quality the price is all that matters. Not just horses but anything, why do some people buy an older car? House? what ever. We all think differantly. And thats a very good thing.
