I would just pull a few hairs and ship them of the UC Davis, lol, and cut all the guess work

The testing isn't much, I am sure one of the other members can give you more info to pass on to the owner on what to do, and I think that it would be worth it.

I realized that the foal isn't yours, but I figured since you were posting about the color you could suggest testing to the owner

Found the discrepancies. Dam's sire side.
Starts WAY back with

DOUBLE TIME MUSIC
dun 1971

AGUA BABY
dun 1961
Both listed as dun who produced a Palamino foal.
MUSICAL GINNY M, QUARTER HORSE, 1976
Color: pal

AQHA-1225072

Who when bred to a sorrel??? produced a dun foal???
WHAT A PAR T DOLL M, QUARTER HORSE, 1980
Color: dun

AQHA-1619304Who when bred to another sorrel produced a red dun foal??
DOLL DUN MISS M, QUARTER HORSE, 1984
Color: rd dun

AQHA-2188528

Who when bred to a grey produced the Red dun grandsire of the mare.

So yes it's possible the sire of the mare is a dunskin. The mare could be either a smokey black grulla or a really dark buckskin
