I've read about a QH stallion that was registered as a bay, but he kept having buckskin and palomino babies out of bay and sorrel mares... so they had him tested and sure enough he was a dark smutty buckskin.

I'm betting the mom could be a smutty buckskin and it's just so hard to tell cause of all the white. Her owners would have to test her, but I bet that's the case.

Are you sure that foals not a dun instead of a buckskin? I don't see any obvious cream genes in the mix until the 4th generation back on the mare, But the mare's sire is a dun and has 3 more generations of obvious dun behind him to back it up. It's possible the mare is really a grulla that got registered on looks as a liver chestnut because dun markings on leopards are hard to find.

He looks buckskin to me, but LP does WEIRD things to coat color. Mom could be a dark sooty buckskin.

I can't say if he's buckskin or dun, probably better to wait until he sheds out a bit.

However, the answer is simple as to how he ended up a dilute. There are only two possible answers. One of his parents is carrying a dilute gene (either cream or dun), or the stallion in question is not his sire.

If you are 100% certain the stallion is the little guy's sire (gorgeous little colt by the way), then I would think the only way to be sure is to test the parents for both cream and dun, or at the very least the colt.

Mare's sire is a dun with a red dun sire and a Blue roan dam. Sire produced two red duns of which one was out of a sorrel mare so that shows the sire does carry the dun gene.

The Paint mare I'm not sure about since the dam has dun a couple generations back and the colors aren't filled in on all breed.

How do you know the offspring is a buckskin? Have you tested for cream... LP is often responsible for what you think you see is not what you have.

i have seen photo this foal was a buttermilk coloured buckskin and shedded out to be a very dark liver chestnut looking colour, but was more likely to be a black buckskin with the red 'tinge' through the coat. I'm thinking this girl is a black buckskin, they sure do come in a variety of shades the buckskins. If she were a solid colour it would be easier to determine.
