Why is this a good idea? Or is it?

Ok, well I've read some people on here mention this. That in order to exercise their horse they will put them into an arena or something, and encourage them to run by chasing them a lil with a whip. This personally doesn't make any sense to me. Why would I want to teach my horse to run away from me when I have a whip? And why would I want to chase my horse around in a confined area? Why not just lunge the horse? I would think chasing would make my horse afraid of me and/or the whip.

I have only seen people do this once. The Swedish Warmblood Association of North America (SWANA) came over here and judged quite a few warmbloods my instructor had and I watched that. The only reason why they did it was so they could watch them run freely.

I think that way the horse can get all his play out. Because when he is on the lounge line they know better than to play. I really don't know, thats the best thing I could think of.

It's called join up and it is a natural horsemanship activity to get your horse to submit to you and respect you....Jennifer and some of the others on here know more then I do about it. I think it is a wonderful activity.

There is a big difference between chasing your horse and performing a nh activity such as join up.

While the method descriped can be effective as far as 'excercise' goes, it is useless for anything else and can actually regress training. The horse will quickly begin to associate the whip with running, you as something he wants to turn away from, and that once he gets far enough away he doesn't have to listen to you.

I think its a matter of who the horse is, and who the owner is. Ive seen the NH methods work for some folks. And for others, its the wrong choice. Its a new story for everyone.
With Bailey, she has no fear of a whip, because I dont use one. If I cant get a response with my voice and body movments, then I'll use a whip as a training aid. But Its not used in the way described above. At least not completly. Its more of an extention of my arm.
As to lunging before work. some horses need it. But I dont think they all need it forever. Learning to understand your horse completly is the goal, so there is no need of pre ride or work lunging. In some cases I have to remind owners of a few facts. Like when was the last time a plastic sack chased you down a trail for 15 minutes. Or one my favs is. Do you think that back in the day, cowboys, ladies, and indians spent time to lunge a horse before they rode? Horses back then were around thier humans more, interacting, and basicly kept thier humans in food, and shelter, with trips to town ect.
Everyone has thier likes and their dislikes. Its all what works for you and your horse. So if it takes me wearing a pink tu tu out to work with my Jessica, hey Im there, bows in my hair, and purple tights to match.. lol

Joinup is when you use your body language and eye contact to ask your horse to move off and come back in to you. It is an exercise that helps teach your horse that you are #1 on the totem pole and is a good bonding experience. No whips used in this exercise. The exercise is done in a round pen.

KZ,

I think you have the wrong impression of join up. Round penning is used to train the horse. The whip is used as a tool, just as a halter and lead rope. Using the round pen establishes communication between horse and horseman. It MAKES the horseman "listen" to the horse if done correctly. You can also work on stepping left and right, turning to the inside and outside, gaits, voice commands, and body language (both man and beast).

I have been using the round pen in my training program for 3 years now. Every horse teaches me something new. I still find myself making mistakes on the "read" and my body position. I have been to dozens of clinics and just watch and learn. It is a skill that needs a lot of time and dedication to perfect. Don't knock it until you see a professional weave his magic.

If your just trying to get extra energy out of him before riding, I think just standing in the middle of the arena/ paddock kiss and clap your hands together.
This is effective w/out the whip.

join up and chasing a horse with a whip are two completely different things... join up never involves a whip.
