what about when you shave everywhere exept the legs and the part under the saddle? it that also because you want the sweat to dry faster in the winter so they dont catch a "bug"?

I bodyclipped my mare because we are showing in a few weeks. Many people who ride/train during the winter bodyclip or other cuts to cut down on the cooling out time (also helps the horse from getting a chill from too much sweat).

Some people only clip parts of the horse so they will cool out faster than they normally would but aren't totally naked.

What you're talking about is a hunt clip- it shaves the entire body of the horse, but leaves an extra patch for the saddle and leaves all the hair on the legs. It was traditionally used in foxhunting, when the horses would really work up a sweat, but needed the extra hair on their legs for protection against tall weeds/grass and brush fences. The saddle patch has two debatable origins, but they are basically the same thing: the riders wanted a bit more cushioning/protection on the back where the saddle would sit, especially for long rides. How much good an inch or two of hair does is debatable, though. It's fairly common now to see people just clip off the entire back, and leave the legs. Not many people are foxhunters anymore, so we really don't need the extra leg protection- it's just easier to not have to clip every little curve and crevice of the leg.

I do a full body clip on our Shetland pony every spring because her coat is so heavy and it takes her so long to shed it out. I don't want her to be miserable when it starts to get warmer.

I've been playing around a lot on the site today. Everytime I see your title "Why do you bodyshave?" I want to say so badly:

"Because I'm hairy"

OK, I got to say it, so its out of my system.
