Ok..I have read dakota's_sable's post and reread it several times and I guess I will be the odd one out here.
I do not see that this pony in any way was abused or negelected, so I do not see what all the uproar is about.
Quote:
After the baby was born he admitted that he has not been working with the pony much, plus over the winter he was not work with at all - just put in a paddock and fed twice a day (this was the only human contact he had all winter). The wife and husband have also admitted that they know nothing about horses what so ever. At least they know enough to water, feed, vaccinate and have him gelded. But that's about it.
Now after reading this part again, while the pony has not recieved any training I still do not see anything wrong. In fact I bet that pony thinks it has it made! Thats a really great life for a pony, or even a horse for than matter! It IS being fed and cared for and doesn't have to do a thing but spend the day grazing in it's pasture! That sounds like pony heaven to me!
The pony is being taken care of.....seen twice a day...and in no way is being negelected or abused.
Even dakota's_sable says that the pony is sound and in good health.
I also see very little difference in her wanting the pony as a companion for her horse and the life it is living right now. The only real difference is that she has the time and is willing to work with the pony.

Sorry folks, but while this pony might not be being handled as many of you would handle it to say that these people do not have any business owning a horse is a bit too harsh in my book.

Be thankful that these people are atleast taking care of the pony apropriatly feed and vet wise. Thats a plus for them, even if they don't know anything else. I'd personally rather have them have him and take good care of him and never touch him, then have someone whom is abusive have him. Having said this, no I don't think they should have a horse if they don't know how to handle one... but I'm thankful that they are atleast good enough to take decent physical care of him. Because in reality, even though the pony hasn't been handeled much he shouldn't be too hard to work with, being that he had space, feed, water, vaccinations... He should actually be pretty healthy mentally.

I second Sandra and KZ

Just because a horse is not 'ASSOCIATED WITH PEOPLE" does not mean the owners have no business owning a horse.

I know MANY People who have horses as HORSES. They are FERREL and will remain that way till the day they die.

To STOP Slaughter, more horses will become just that, PETS. And those of us who RIDE our horses must accept that fact to stop other things that we see as "BAD". Is it so bad that the pony gets to run free in a pasture? Be fed without having to WORK for it like our horses?

I think you are letting your WANT for the pony get in the way of the big picture.

How do people get OVER the fear of horses and other animals? By being AROUND them. Yes, I agree, this was not a good STARTER for them, but they take good care of the pony from your description, and should be left alone. MANY ponies are pets. There is no LOGICAL Reason for them to be RIDDEN except for OUR Pleasure. NOt theirs.

See if you can find an older, well trained pony and possibly TRADE the ponies. Don't jip them though. Find them a SOUND pony that you feel would be a great STRAIGHT Trade across the board.

You said there are other animals on the propery. My horses bud is my DOG. NOT another horse. He's happy and healthy at that. He prefers to be left alone lately. Though he is happy Sandy is here on the property, he still goes and grazes by my dog and leaves her on the other side of the paddock. Some horses prefer NOT to have a buddy if they are raised that way and are use to it. I've seen horses we HAVE to keep separate because NO amount of turn out can get them to accept company. They cannot handle it because it isn't what they are use to.

There are lots of sides to each story. And different views which is all we are trying to give you.

Good Luck. DOn't fret about it too much and don't bug them too much either. One of those kids just might jump on the horse wagon because that pony is there. But if you talk them out of NOT having any pony, because of their fear, the kids may NEVER get another chance at a horse in the future.

NEVER underestimate the power of a kid and the view of a pony. It only takes one movie, one story from a friend to give them the curiosity to check into it more.

I agree with you Sandra A-1, KZWestern and Blistering Winds. In no way at all is this pony being neglected or abused and I am grateful for this. His basic needs are being met. I just see potential in this pony and would love the experience of working with him. I have offered the couple a price for the pony and left it at that. When they come to a decision, they have my phone # and I also let them know they could call me at work. I have not said one critizing or negative word to them about how they are caring for this pony nor do I intend to. I have in fact encouraged them to find an older well trained trail horse as a starter, one that they have no reason to be afraid of and feel that their kids are safe around. I have a set price in mind and that is as high as I will go for the pony. If they don't accept my offers that's fine, I will let it go. Their are other ponies out there for companionship.

I am thankful that he is being taking care of appropriately. In no way would I want to see this pony (or any horse for that matter) in an abusive situation. As I said before, I would just like to have the experience of working with him and finding out his true potential.

not a dream life... hes by himself in a paddock. talk about herd isolation! im sure he would much prefer to be with some horsey company - since he is a herd animal. some people could see this as abuse - you wouldnt leave a person by themselves for a long period of time - theyd go nuts!!! - well i would anyway!

but yes, he has it better than others - i do think its sad though... and he would be better of going to a new home with company and where he can fulfil his potential.
