I think people just say that because when you're young you don't have anything to compare it to. Your first "love" might seem like it then, but later you'll meet someone and realize that it really wasn't. Not saying that ALWAYS happens, but it does happen and is the reason why so many people probably tell you that. I have been devastated over a break-up before, but even now, I'm not sure that I was really in love.

I can see how it can be frustrating though, because it seems like people are kind of discounting your feelings...like you can't be that hurt because you're too young to really have loved someone. That would bug me too.

Ok a couple of things I have learned. First I'm not going to tell you that you weren't in love. Chances are you were in love to the best of your capabilites. That changes with time and so that is why so many say you weren't in love. In time as your love changes you may still think you loved him but it won't be the same way you love people in the future.

Second. I have read your other thread I'd like to point out, you can love someone and them not love you back. You may have loved him but it certainly doesn't sound like he loved you. I don't think you broke his heart I think he broke yours.

I agree. And I think one day and countless boys later, you will understand

I've said the three words to a good number of guys, starting when I was your age. I dated a guy for TWO YEARS from when I was 17 until I was 19, and I truly thought I was in love. It wasn't til I was 20 that I met someone else, and figured out I really had no clue what love was before that point. There can be obsession, infatuation, etc that we can mistake as love...but one day, you will see, I promise

Maybe you were in love, but chances are, it wasn't really love

While only you know your emotions, it would be interesting to see if your views on this subject and this particular relationship was the same in a few years.

I don't know how old you are, but I met my husband when I was 16. We are still married today, I am now 36.

I don't think love has an age.
