why do people get nervous?

i always wondered... why do people get so nervous before a show?? weather its a little schooling show, or a big A-Rated show?

i get nervous coz i dont like people watchin me. weird, huh? but its usually the wait that gets me. once im in the ring and we get started, im not nervous and i just ride. as if im schooling alone at home.

to me, i guess it's everyone watching me more then anything. and then there is the thought of screwing up in front of everyone and embarassment. but then that's just me, i tend to be a bit negative. but then it's usually happens before, and then during it, it tends to go away.

I really don't get nervous anymore. i just pretend its me and patton in the ring by ourselves with no one watching. if i stay calm she stays calm.

I get nervous because I feel pressure to perform well. I have a great horse and I have a lot of money on the line (entry fee), so I need to perform well. I have lots of people who are counting on me and wanting me to do well (and competitors wanting me to do bad), so I guess it's just pressure.

As for people staring at me, I never know that people are watching me when I am performing. It is just me, my horse, the cows, and my herdholders and turnback men.

Because I've spent hours and hours schooling my horse and myself. I've poured thousands of dollars into lessons and training and class fees, trainer fees, schooling fees, association fees, etc. I've cleaned my tack, loaded the trailer, and checked everything twice. My horse is bathed and pulled, if not braided. My clothes are starched and my boots are polished.

Now I've got 4 minutes in the ring to show the judge I'm the best, and if it's a flat class, I'm sharing that time.

And that's why I stress at shows!

usually bcuz i was (i dont really get nervous anymore) afraid of messing up (what an optimistic additude, 'eh?) or not impressing my show coach - but as soon as i got in the ring (showjumping or dressage) or started my course (XC - im an eventer BTW) everything dissapeared and its just me and my boy and i just ride

but MBA's got a good point
