Reading this thread, I am SO glad I was able to sell our unregistered mustang. We took a huge loss on it, but its better than feeding him all winter.

And this is why I am NOT breeding my mare regardless of how nice she is. By the time I pay the vet bills I could "save" several horses.

I'm sure glad I can afford all of mine. It must be so hard on those that cant. I have never taken one to the auction and dont think I ever will. I'm the ****** that would drag them home though.

Just goes to prove that, when people think about the cost, they think they can't afford it.

Atleast, that's the way I see it.

My small animal vet friend sold a fairly green event horse for 18k a few weeks ago- a horse someone practically gave to her a year ago because they didn't know what to do with him. There's still a market, it's just all about niche and marketing- she'd invested maybe 5k or more in having a four star rider work him and in taking him to 3DE's all over the midwest. And the horse was no saint, and definitely not a star on the cross country course, but marketed well and to the right people...

Linds, there were three "supposed DNA'd" curlys that were yearlings and a 2 year old that didn't get a bid either. They had the curly mane and almost no tail, but I couldn't tell you if they were ABC's or just "DNA curly". They weren't bad looking, but there was no market here for even a "rare" horse.

Also, Mary's hubby called me tonight after I posted this and I got another call while I was talking to him. It was a mom of a friend of Katie's. Her mother had a horse that they wanted to give away for free and thought since I had horses I would be interested. It was a 3 year old mare, ridden some, but no papers or history beyond being a horse. I said thanks, but no thanks. They couldn't find anyone who wanted the horse, even though it already rides. Folks, there are some horses that are selling, but it takes a particular horse in a particular situation. I don't see it getting better unless the economy changes radically.

As to those horses that didn't get bids at this sale, the folks had to take them home and pray that they can get them sold before they run out of feed or pasture. There are not many "rescue" places around here that can handle this number of horses coming into bad situations this winter. There are NO killer buyers buying at auctions in our area, they've all pulled out to the sales closer to the borders.

The young horses that were just left at the sale will either be returned to the man who abandonded them (and who cannot feed them anymore) or they will be put down. Putting them down is probably the best they can hope for. The auction owner cannot even get a killer buyer to come pick up a free load of horses in good health.

1. I expect I know exactly what horses they are and can only hope the gal is selling out of the breed, or will be encouraged to do so through this experience.... not ABC horses (if I'm not mistaken, I heard she found them at auction, small unbroke, ungelded, young horses she was trying to sell for 3k+ last summer and has slowly lowered the price till this) There is one other "breeder" around warrensburg, though, I think, so maybe it was her. Frankly it's not a loss if either sell out...

2. I was going to disagree with the first part of what you said, then you pretty much said what I was going to. There is no market locally ESPECIALLY for a rare horse! The average curly buyer is a captive buyer- allergic to horses and looking for a curly, and they aren't waiting around at auction houses. I had a couple people ask if Deb was for sale at the curly show.

John... do you mean that used cars are cheap? That actually might be VERY good news for my parents.
