OK we know all about the coat color genetics.. but I have seen very little research on the markings NON PAINT!! I am talking about

the white face markings and leg white ??
Have they find the genetic markers for them yet??

Please take a peak here http://www.sabinoarabianhorseregistry.com to view what most think do not exisit These are Purebred Arabian horses that sport Extra white. The stallion R Khasper has been tested by UC Davis and is truly a Maximum Bay Sabino horse. Yes, bay....his base coat is Bay and what you see that appears as a white horse is simply excessive white markings. He does sport pink skin underneath everywhere you see the white.

There are actually quite a few Purebred Sabino Arabians and now that they are becoming more accepted as those out there become more educated, you are likely to continue to see more and more.

If I were you, I would google search Michael Bowling as he is a writer and a Equine geneticist expert in his field. I am certain you will find many interesting pieces written by him on the subject you are looking to learn more about.

THanks Denise...

I am going off of what was said in another thread that if a TObi had white on it's face then it also carried a SB gene .. I find it hard to believe that basically EVERY horse has the SB gene because it has white markings

If your talking about "chrome" ...as in stars, blazes, socks..... you might want to check out this thread: Chrome Genetics
Here is a post I made on it:

Oh...and she did have just a "touch" of white on the heel of a rear foot.

They are actually thinking a lot of "regular" white markings may not be genetic, at least not specific markings.

Interestingly, when they clone horses the clones have different markings!

“Color is genetically determined, so it will be the same between donor and offspring,” Hinrichs said. “The presence of leg and face markings are also genetically determined, but the size and shape of the white markings are due to random migration of the white cells during development, so the size, shape and placement of white markings will be different.” Hinrichs pointed out that identical twin foals follow the same rules. http://www.corralonline.com/articles...0201180031.htm

And just because you see all that white as Sandra noted does not mean you will get it if breeding for it. Genotype vs Phenotype can be tricky business

PeggySue, I hate to be the bearer of bad news here, remember I am just the messenger BUT depending what breed of horse you breed to, you could breed two solid's and get a horse like R Khasper If I am not mistaken his parents are both solid or have very little white. It happens all the time. Best to study both pedigrees of the individual(s) you are looking to breed and get color savvy....I know lots of Arabian breeders who have been SHOCKED, some pleasantly others not so much so, to get a loudly marked foal from two solid parents. It happens.....

Good luck!
