| Senior Member+ | White hooves on Black legs
Ok even for an appaloosa my new filly is a little strange. On her front end she has normal hoof colors. On her stocking leg, She has a mostly white hoof with a few narrow black stripes. On her black leg she has a mostly black hoof with some typical appaloosa white stripping. However on her back legs she gets weird. Instead of black hooves with black legs she has White hooves with one narrow black stripe on one hoof. If you look close at the heel bulb in the second photo on the inside of the furthers hoof you will see the small black stripe. Even for an appaloosa I figured she's have more black on those back hooves.

We have a characteristic bay mare - she has 4 white hooves on black/bay legs - and no pink skin - no stripes on her hooves at all, though. I have heard an old rumor that characteristic Apps w/ white hooves on dark legs are supposedly 100% characteristic/color producers...but I heard that a long time ago. You can kinda see it in a couple pictures here - where her feet are *kinda* not muddy. .. What does the rest of your filly look like? |

Yea I've heard that also, but don't set much store in it. The Filly is a bay dun with like four spots on her hips, White Sclara and the one definately stripped front hoof on black leg. here is her Biggest spot LOL She is 4 generation Appaloosa to Appaloosa breeding so there is that "possiblity" that she could be homozygous. but her pattern isn't 'typical' of a homozygous pattern.

Yeah, I've never seen anything genetically to prove the point about the white feet. Let me tell you, our bay mare definitely doesn't have the typical homozygous pattern either. I don't trust the rumor, but thought I'd bring it up. She is a cutie little one. What are you going to do with her? |

Well It's kind of a long story. I bought her because of a dream I had about a month after my old gelding who I'd had for 23 years died earlier this year. Long story short she's his replacement so I didn't have a specific plan for her before or after I bought her, but like all my horses, she's gonna be trained for cowboy mounted shooting at least.

I know two apps that are the same way! My fewspot filly has one white stocking and 3 solid legs but 4 predominantly white hooves, and my friends Characteristic filly has 4 black legs with 4 white hooves!

My Appaloosa mare has a white sole on one of her dark legs, but the hoof is reasonably normal colored. ACC |
