Whisper's first Wound! Am I treating it correctly?

Arrived today at the barn to find a pretty nasty looking cut on the side of Whisper's knee and down the front of his cannon bone. I have NO idea how he did this in a dirt paddock with nothing sharp.

Anyway, it wasn't bleeding so it looked to be a few hours old. Here it is before I cleaned it....

And after I use Betadine solution wash and triple antibiotic ointment.

Should I be doing anything else? What should I look out for? I have owned horses for 2 years but never, thank G-d had to deal with a wound.

I'd say your treating it correctly. Just keep it clean and watch for infection. Also I'd recommend a Tetanus shot just as a preventative since you do not know what he did it on.

You did great

It looks pretty superficial, more skinned than anything. Keep an eye out for any swelling or tenderness, as he may have really knocked his leg doing this. More likely than not it will be just fine

for wounds like that i like to wash them with ivory dish soap, then dry and put a antibacterial cream on it like Neosporin (sp?). after it has healed a little bit, like not an open wound anymore, put vaseline on it to keep it soft and promote hair growth. i do this once a day.
