When The Stallion is HOT, but the breeder is not...

.....quite sane.....

Hypothetical question....
You want to breed your mare and have found the perfect stud, BUT the stallion owner is a little 'out there' in one way or another. Let's face it... there's a segment of the horse owning world that is a wee bit wacky. Do you take the chance of any 'complications' to get that perfect foal? Or do you move on to a different stallion who isn't quite as nice, but that stands at an extremely reputable farm and is owned by a consummate professional.

How much does the OWNER factor into choosing or not choosing your next foals Daddy?

hmmm very goood question.. just like what came first the chicken or the egg. you must really sit down and think about it.

asking yourself questions, like are you willing to loose your mare for a future horse? things like that i would put into play first before doing anything else!

Well, you have to put up with the stallion owner until he/she signs off on your foal for registration after it is foaled. So, will that owner allow your foal to be registered after a year of waiting? If this is the only stallion in the world for you, just remember you will need to stay on the stallion owner's good side for at least a year, maybe longer.

I guess it depends on how the are "out there." What do they do that is iffy? If it is seriouly dangerous than maybe pass if there is no way around it.

I would pass and go on to the next great stud...there are so many out there and I have a very low people tolerance.

I don't tolerate wierd/strange/eccentric/stupid people well. That is why my girlfriend is handling sales right now. People bug me...and boy....let me tell you we have met some wierd people already and we haven't sold that many horses.

The lady that came by for our pipe corrals the other day...had to listen to her life story...then she had to idiosyncratically (sp) mark each corral she was going to pick up the next day with purple duck tape...cause purple was her color...couldn't we tell, look at all the purple she was wearing...and then proceeded to tell us all about her purple car interior, purple bridles, purple bits....I am SOOOO glad my gf was dealing with her cause I could hardly stand to listen to her...

Then, we went to go look at a paint mare for real cheap locally...we knew a little back history on the mare, she was good on the trail, crossed water, etc but her owner was afraid of her. Apparently had also made her earshy because she...poured peroxide down her ear routinely for a while (to stop ear itching...um helloo....maybe mite powder or a vet call would have fixed it)...anyway, went to look at the mare and it was dead lame in the right hind at the trot and canter. Lady bout near cried because we didn't want to buy the horse. "I....I...I just can't handle this rejection...this is why I want to just take her to the auction and be done with it...there isn't anything wrong with her...any vet would vet her sound...I...I just cant handle this"...OMG (and by the way both my GF and I saw the lameness as well as my other friend who had recommended I come look at the mare).

I guess it really all depends on your own tolerance to handle the type of "wierdness" associated with that particular stallion owner.

If your horse says no, you either asked the wrong question...or asked the question wrong.

This is EXACTLY the kind of behavior I am talking about.....
Not that the stallion owner will do something to endanger the horse physically..... but that they are a few fries short of a Happy Meal.

I think it's easy to make a choice to move on when you see a potential for danger.... (i.e. husbandry issues that are unsafe). But when it's simply an issue of dealing with odd behavior... like say the SO lights candles, incense, has a disco ball in the breeding shed, and Barry White playing....
Is that something that makes you think....."Next!" or not...

NEXT!!!!
Stallion owners definatley play a role, IMO. I know a gal who breeds her stallion. She is a liar and a cheat, not to mention back stabber. Needless to say, I would pass up her exceptional stud anyday, just based on her and her behaviour.

It wouldn't bother me. But then, I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed either. Maybe stallion owners wouldn't breed to my mares if they talked to me for long enough? I have never even talked to the owner of the stallion I bred to using AI. She could have purple carpeting in her stalls for all I know. As long as it isn't dangerous, it wouldn't bother me in the least. And even if it was dangerous it wouldn't bother me with AI.

I've never bred, but the stallion owner would play a large role to me. There are a lot of things that can go wrong or a bit wonky, and having someone professional to deal with would make things a lot easier in those tricky and unfortunate situations. Adding in a bad owner would only make them worse.

Well I dunno April.
Ken and I are out there............
think maybe thats our problem?
ROFLMAO!
To answer your question, no it would not bother me, I would breed to the stallion and not pay the owner any mind.
We buy hay from a man like this....... I don't bring the man and his wacky ideas home, just his hay which is good quality stuff.
