I think everyone here has had pretty much covered it
There was a World class stallion a friend of mine bred to about 20 years ago. The owner was a flake and possibly a crook. I believe my friend finally got papers on the foal/s? but not everyone did. At one time there was such a huge legal battle over ownership, stud fees, you name it... that the stallion was kept in a padlocked stall to prevent him from being moved.

anyways, I can think of one man inparticular who had two GREAT jumping stallions in Canada, these studs were very well bred and had great abilities, but the owner was WEIRD WEIRD WEIRD, I have seen people pass them up when he was the owner because it was just to much. The stallions have now been sold, and can get back to uncomplicated breeding. So personally I would go with another stallion with a better owner.

I believe I know who you are talking about ..... (initials D.S.) but I won't go into details as this would have to be moved to the adult section. The guy I am thinking about was creepy beyond belief.

OMG I think I know who you are talking about too!!! That was all over the news, and now he's in prison, is that who you are referring to? If it is, I've heard horror stories about him, and the new one that has the stallion too. It's a pretty famous stallion too right? EEEEKK!! Too bad!!!

April, it's really simple to me... If I dont' like you, no matter how great yoru stud is, I won't do business with you...

I find this issue in my breed of dogs regularly and we're a fairly 'small' breed with a relatively tight genepool, but if I can't have a comfortable relationship with the stud dog owner, why would I do business with them, even if I'm AI'ing??? I can't trust that all their information is fully on the up and up, etc regarding health, temperament and other pertinant things.

NOW if the person is truly just a bit 'off' as in will only eat boiled white rice and nothing else, well THAT won't stop me for doing business with them, but if they're a general fruitball and tend to be histrionic, etc, forget it I don't care if it is the ONLY stud to suit my horse or dog ... Life's too short to deal with total fruitballs... If I wanted to do that, I'd got back to school and get a new degree in psychology or psychiatry

I think for me it would depend on the level of loopy.

If they want to call the four winds and do a little dance to insure conception, I might give them a funny look but I could live with that.

If they want to talk about being one with the spirit of their horse and never ride them because they are all "friends", but the horses are in good shape and happy, I could live with that.

Now, if they are calling me at all hours of the night and day to discuss the moon being in proper alignment to conceive a filly or something like that, pass please!

In general, as long as their horses are well taken care of and in good health and safe to be around, I think I could deal with it. If they were unsafe or dangerous or really, really annoying, I would probably pass.

If I liked the stud well enough I would breed to him. I'm their for the stud not the owner. AI so so much easier, my horse stays home, and all I do is call and say ship me the junk. I'm very picky on where my horse's go and how they are taken care of.

I would just add one more word of caution... if they set you off a little bit BEFORE they get your money, just think how they'll be after! Everyone's always on their best behavior when they're courting possible clients--it will never be better than it is right now.
