![]() | When is it best to breed your mare??? I just wondered when its best to breed your mare after she has her foal. At her first heat or is it better to wait at her second heat?Or is there any difference? Thank you |

| Senior Member+ | In the long run it is better to NOT breed your mare every year. It is better for the mare to NOT cary a foal at the same time as nursing one.

| Senior Member+ | It is the best idea to not breed ur mare every year as Top dun said.. They of course went through alot breeding their first foal, let them take it easy for at least a year

| As Trevor and Top Dun stated breeding every year should be looked at with a bit of restraint. However in answer to your question it would be better to breed on the mare's normal heat after the foal heat. Nature needs time to refresh and clean the mares system out. This does not happen within the short space between birth and foal heat. Potential bacteria can easily be there and even with a series of anti-biotics shots there is no guarantee that complete cleansing will be accomplished in that stort span of time. | |

| Senior Member+ | I, myself, dont like breeding on a foal heat. I like to wait a heat. In the wild, the mare would be bred on the foal heat. That insures that the foal is born at about the same time. If the mare were to wait a month after each foaling, she would foal one month later every year. She would end up foaling to late in the year and less chance of the foal surviving. 1) If this is a potential show horse. You might have to bred on the foal heat to make sure that you get your baby born at the right time. I still dont understand why they dont set the guidelines so that the mare could foal in spring. Start the year in spring. This making babies in winter is for the birds. I live in Fl, so it doesnt matter to much, but I feel for you guys that are having to foal in the freezing weather. 2) As for waiting a year. I agree. My vets disagree in a certain situation. If you have a senior mare and she is a broodmare..........you dont wait. You breed back to back. The conception rate drops on a senior mare, if you wait. The chances of getting her bred drop every year that she isnt bred. Jessie |
