| Senior Member+ | When has Tack "Had It" I have a couple boxes of tack in in the barn, the basement, and the house that I'd like to clean up and possibly use. But how do you know when leather is used up, can't be used anymore, or is too dry to be safe? Also how aobut bits. I have some that have been out in the barn for awhile and have started to rusy (some more than others) how do you know when to just toss them and when to try and "save them". All help is greatly appreciated

| Senior Member | If there aren't many cracks in it and all the parts are together, a good oiling will fix most tack. (Someone mentioned soaking leather in a bag of oil for a few days.) As for the bits, clean them up with rust remover (or soak them in Coca Cola) and as long as there aren't any sharp edges, and it look like a bit still, it should be fine. |
