| Senior Member+ | Wheezing dog... help?
My five year old miniature poodle has, for the past few months, been having these weird "wheezing" attacks. We haven't gone to the vet yet because it's SO infrequent that I forget about it soon after it happens, and then it won't happen again for weeks or months. I can think of maybe four times in the last few months that she's done it... one was just now, she wheezed rapidly for a few seconds and then it stopped. This has only started since we moved into this house, and so initially I figured allergies of some sort. (Oddly enough I've developed them too this year.) It's not like a cough... it's just a rapid breathing that sounds like wheezing in and out. She doesn't appear to have any trouble breathing at all or she'd have been at the vet's instantly. Now that she's done it again for the first time in about two months and reminded me (argh) about it, heartworms or something like that has come into my mind and so I'm going to be calling the vet in the morning to see what he has to say. In the meantime... thoughts? I keep saying "cough" when talking about it but it's not really a cough, just sudden really fast wheezy breathing. Her gums seem normal to me, but she does have AWFUL breath (has all her life) so I guess the possiblity of an infection in her mouth is there. I tend to think not because she doesn't seem to be hurting at all. She is as energetic as she's always been, bright-eyed and happy and her appetite hasn't changed.

Your description makes it sounds like a "reverse sneeze". Dog will sound like it is sucking air in and out. If that is what it is, some dogs will stop if you hold your hand over their nose for a few seconds which gets their breathing pattern back to normal. I had a dog that would do this every now and then. Luckily she did it one day when the vet could see it. I was told it wasn't something to worry about. Since I can't actually see your dog while she's doing it, I can't be sure its the same thing. So I would suggest you talk to your vet about it. Good luck!!
