whats wrong with him?

My trainers horse, who I ride has been lame for a months. The vet (who's opinion of which I'm skeptic beleiving) says he has arthiritis (in recent months) . . . " walk him, see you in 2 weeks" it's been longer than that by a lot.
I'm not sure its arthiritis . . . but here's what going on . . . When this particular problem first started it was after a bad jump, supposedly he "saved" a rider over a jump she wasn't ready for and the assistant trainer says she heard a loud popping kind of noise, this was probalby the begining of may? now his hocks swollen, he's got a "bump" on the outside of his hock, on his butt a few inches from his tail he's got a circular tough spot maybe 4 inches in diameter (muscle?) and it feels kind of hollow around it when compared to the other side (maybe because he holds this leg up a lot and the muscle has grown a lot???), currently he has rain rot (persistent problem) on his legs and randomly on butt, also he has diabetes (I don't know the details on this), he also had scratches earlier this year.
Recently: . . . well today I decided to give him a good grooming and me and the assistant trainer were talking in the stall, she was stretching him a little and when she stretched his hurt leg (right hind by the way) he held it up for a while and his stomach muscles were "seizing up" as she said (they were all tense), so he just kind of rubbed it and his inner hip untill he relaxed and would put weight on it. So I finished grooming a went and took him for a walk in the arena. I stopped to talk to someone and he layed down and started to roll (he loves rolling in the cool arena sand) so I tried to get him to get up and as usual he ignored me, eventually he listens and goes to get up positioned where his hurt leg would need to support all of his weight, he couldn't do it and lied back down completely flat . . at this point I called for my trainer and she said to let him lie there for a second and see whats going on . . . just seconds after we had decided we should roll him over so he could use the other leg (but before we could) he tried again, this time successfully but we knew it had been painful . . . a soon as he's up he's holding the leg up again and his stomach muscles all tense (from holding it up) again. I rubbed his upper leg and where he was tense untill he would put a little but of weight on it and we went to see how he moved . . . he's now dragging that leg. She called the vet and says he'll be out on monday (3 days) . . . untill then painkillers. I just want to now what others think about whats going on . . . could he of idk torn a ligament or something???

Getting a second opinion is hard here (Maui) he's pretty much "the" vet to go to for horses, and also it's not my horse and I don't have the money to have another vet come a look (or the knowledge to say hers is wrong) but it all just doesn't sound right.

Yes, it does sound like muscle damage! I am the queen of torn ligaments (both ankles, one twice, and shoulder!) and every time I tore ligaments I heard a pop. When I told the doctor after doing my shoulder, he was convinced I'd broken my collar bone, but no, it was ligaments!

It's not your horse, so there's not a whole lot you can do here except mention to the owner that a second opinion might be worthwhile. I would get a massage therapist to look at the muscle you described. If it's a different vet - or even the same vet - I would point out the muscle to the vet, and also try to recreate the stomach qivvers.

That seems to be it then, that was sort of my feeling or instinct I guess, do you know what the healing process is and if he can be back at 100% again?

You can't say "that's it" because of an anecdote I told you. It needs to be correctly diagnosed by either a massage therapist or a vet who has actually seen the horse.

I wasn't saying that I positively know that is it, just because of a message, but on all the forums I've posted on that was what everyone said it was most likely to be, so now I can ask my trainer if that's a possibility and she can get it checked out by her vet. What my question was, if that's what's going on, do you know how treatable it will be for a horse?
I may be 15 but I do realize I'm on the internet. I'd never take someones word as fact who I don't know especially about this horse. Right now all I want is to get "my" horse (because I'm the only one who seems to care at this point) back up to where he was in April, because this was the happiest horse I'd ever met and now he's miserable and I just want him better.
