Whats the best way to....

approach a mare and foal, when the mare does her darndest to stay inbetween you and her foal?

Diablo is not agresseve to us, but she dont want you near her foal. I have sat in the stall quietly, but momma has prety well taught Beauty to stay away from us. The little one is curious, so I sure she come around eventually.

I would either tie and/or hobble the mare while handling the foal.

It's safer for you and the baby. Mom may not be aggressive yet, but you never know what could trigger an outburst, and she could easily knock you into the stall wall fussing over the foal. IMO it's better for the foal to grow up seeing mom pout in the corner while baby gets scratches or lessons than to see mom pushing humans around/getting in their space.

I agree exactly. Catch momma first. Either tie or have someone hold her and keep her busy, while you handle baby. That way she learns that it's ok for you to handle it and you won't hurt the baby. Is this her first foal?

i would tie the mare, and handle the foal that way. Once the mare see's you handleing the foal over a period of times, i think she will realise you arn't out to hurt her baby and she won't mind you touching.

This is Diablo's second foal. After about a week with her first one she got to were she really didnt care about us messing with the foal. She is not aggressive, but I just dont want to have the foal running around like a maniac with no handling. I used to let the foals be foals till about 4 months old and then start their handling at weaning, but since I been handling the babies younger I like the outcome a lot better and its not such a fight.

I will try tying Diablo, she usually is very good about it.
