![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | whats a large stud
This is a question I can't seem to get straight answers for and there fore can't determin how a large stud and small stud is defined. Ie is it the number of mares they have, number of stallions they have, number of foals bred each year, or number of total breeding stock they have and use. and how many of each are needed to before being considered a large stud. I have to explain this in my dessertation but not allowed to base it all on my own opinion.

Well that is really a totally subjective thing. It is hard to say. Some people may thing that one or two stallions and a large number of mares and foals could constitute a large stud while others may think that standing 5-6 or more stallions to the public, but keeping only a few private mares constitutes a large stud etc. (in what country are you trying to define a stud for?) because there are even national differences depending on a countries population and amount of available "Farm" land.

Uk/Northern Ireland I was thinking of defining it on the number of breeding stock they keep rather than number of stallions/mares. because i know some studs just keeps mares, and some just stallions. but what would a threshold be. About 15 breeding stock or would that be too little for a large stud. |

Well here in the US Especially in the western States, A large stud has hundreds of horses while a small stud has only a few. I think that the people in your local area are better able to answer that as I don't have any experience with the UK or Ireland. You might want to go from farm to farm in your local area and take a poll from the local horse breeders. That would give you a better deffinition for your area based on what people in your area percieve as large, small or medium. For any kind of report or dessertation, I would believe that that would also be the most valid way to handle the issue. in your dessertation, you can say that you visited X amount of stud farms and asked the same question and X amount said that a large stud is This, and a small stud is that. That way the deffination is NOT your opinion, but the concensus of people you polled. You might want to discuss this with your teacher.
