What vet is needed for A.I.?

Is my regular horse vet ok or do I need a repo specialist? Does anyone know any good vets around me (I'm 30-45 minutes southwest of Olympia,WA)?

I am not breeding until next year at the soonest, but I'm just wondering... My mare is maiden and I want to have the best chance to get her in foal the first time.

you have to make sure that you use a vet that knows how to properly handle and inseminate a mare with cooled semen. If your own personal vet is familiar with breeding with AI than that is fine. But you need to ask your vet how much knowledge they have otherwise you will need to find one that knows more.

I would use a repro vet without even giving it a second though. It's not just the inseminating part that you need to worry about. Checking the mare, doing a culture/cytology, ultrasounding to measure the follicle, inseminating and checking for pregnancy among other things are all best handled by a repro vet. My regular vet happens to be very, very good at repro so I do use him, but I have used a specialist in the past.

Depends...is your regular vet familiar and successful with breeding mares via AI? If not, I would look for a vet that is. However, if he/she is, then no problem, you are good to go.

Ok thanks guys. That is what I kinda figured. I will definitely be talking to my vet about a lot of things before I breed. I am still doing lots of online research about AI and breeding in general
