What to do with her tail?!

Okay, if it's in either a 3 tube or 1 tube tail bag, it's gets really icky and matted..

If it's down, she seems to step on it and pull out chunks...

If it's braided, it's really hard to un-do, the top part gets really flat, and tangled, and it's takes hours to un tangle it all.

Suggestions?

If it's long enough that she's stepping on it when it's down, I would just snip off the ends. It will make it look much thicker too.

That's just me though I know a lot of people won't cut their horse's tail.

That was my thought too. I would cut it to a nice flattering length, it will look thicker and healthier as well as not get stepped on.

Someone agrees with me?! That is certainly a first! Haha.

My mare always manages to step on her tail in the trailer, I have no idea how, but she always does, and pulls out HUGE chunks. I'm constantly trimming it as we go to shows a lot and need to trailer there. I have to keep it relatively short so she's not always stepping on it since I ALWAYS forget my tail bag for the trailer ride! So I've just ended up keeping it short because I can never remember my tail bag... works pretty good, and it's thickened up quite a bit too.

I don't really want to cut it any shorter... It's already about 10 inches off the ground.

i don't really know how she does it, but it happens a lot. SHe used to have a really nice tail too.

Thanks!

Have you thought about trying this method? - (no bag and it's shorter)

if her tail is 10 inches from the ground, i don't think she CAN step on it! i keep my show horses just 2-3" off the ground and they never step on it, even if they get stopped and backed up hard.
i'm guessing she is ripping it out other ways. if you don't have the handles taped on your buckets already, that is a common place for them to catch tail hair on.

i don't put my horses tails up, i leave them down and alone as much as possible. if they really NEED to be put up, i'll put them up in figure 8 knots and cover each with vet wrap.. but it's been YEARS since i've even done that.
i think the less you mess with them the better.
