Question What to do about backing up?

I rode one of the new horses at the barn for training last night and she seemed to really like reverse lol. If she didn't want to move forward for some reason, she would just up and refuse to move forward. What do you do with a horse when they refuse to walk forward?

Turn them, make them move forward, dont let them resist by backing up.

Do ANYTHING to make them move/work. Make the right thing easy and the wrong thing hard.

Disengage the hindend, yield the front end. Make it harder for them to not move forward.

What do you mean by making it hard to not move forward and making it easier to move forward?

If she doesn't want to move forward, make her move every other direction. It takes a lot more work for a horse to disengage his hindquarters or cross over in the front then it is to just go forward.

So, give the option to go forward, if she doesn't take her, put her in circle, use indirect rein, smack her butt to get her to yield and make her go until she puts slack in the rein. When she does, release and ask her to go forward again. If sh choses not to, do the same thing again.

That is what I do...MOST (every horse I have seen, except my friend's mare) horses usually get tired of backing for a really long time, as it is one of the harder directions for a horse to move -- its not natural for them.

IME this horse has not had the proper training. The reason it backs up is because it's not been taught to go forward into the pressure of the bit, a big part of the training has been missed, and whoever 'trained' this horse needs to go back and 're-do' it! It's not your job to retrain this horse, the horse is confused and doesn't know what you want! Please realize that most trained horses will do what they have been trained to do...this one obviously wasn't trained to go forward. IF you try to force her, she will more than likely start rearing up with you, and you will get hurt.

MS- yeah she is here at my barn for retraining, but the BO just wants as many people to just get on her and fool around and do weird things with her so that she is used to different people. It was only a couple instances that I wanted her to get into a different spot and she kept backing up so I was just wondering what to do when she does do that
