Alyia and i have been together for a year now. i got her unbroke and unhandled she was forced into a trailer when i bought her witch made her very shy of trailers i can get her in but most people can't. She follows me right in. I lounge her no sweat. I joined up with her. i round pen. i throw all kinds of stuff at her. like one day decided to put a tarp out in the arena. She is a normally spooky horse. She danced around it untill finally she place a foot ontop of it. then another. then we where trotting over it. Once i blind folded her(quick release style.) and asked her to follow me no lead rope tugging i had a lead but she followed my voice we even steped up in the barn and in her stall. So she really trust me. I have done so much pole work when we both look at a pole at the same time we sigh. I have free lounged her over jumps and jumped her ounce over a foot and she loved it. I have jumped lots of times on trails bu accident of course. when i whisle she comes running. I can run as fast as i can towards he and she will just make a grumpy face. I ride her bareback. i used numerous bits on her. i rode her backwards once. i stood on my saddle once. i went under her. slid off her but slid over her head jumped off while w/t/c and she stoped. i trail ride her with groups. Latly i have been trail ridding her by myself. The used to be spooky little filly will go out alone and loves it. Alyia is only 15.1 hands and im long legged 5.7 so shes a little small. i cant show most stuff on her i wish i could. I think we are going to start endurance next year. She does halter crosses bridges/water/roads. Been near traffic heck yesterday i rode her to the local tack shop because i needed a bathroom brake and i came out and the owner was spoiling her for me. She lets me know when somethings up. Yesterday a dirt bike was coming down trail and she started snorting so i moved her off the trail and the bike came wailing past. A bird flew over her head and she just jumped. i gave lessons off her. She tells me when they are too far foward or back. She brings her head up if heals come up or they have too tight rein. She doesnt get angry easy. She loves me even if i eat her carrot =D. she saved misty yesterday. She is my best friend. But idk if i am training her correctly. She does leg yeild/sidepassing she is getting the whole w/j thing i got her listening to leg. She ground ties. if i say stand she stands and waits usually. Picks up all feet good for vet/ferrier/dentist. I just dont know where i go from here. so she backs/w/t/c/g w/j extended jog sidepasses/leg yeilds 4year old we saw a snake once and she just backed up. i absolutly love me arab and wish she would grow so i could jump and show her more but what i want to know is am i training her right??? and what next?? i would love to do endurance on her how do i get started and how do i check palse ect? as some of you know i am limited because of a broken arm but am still going to work with Alyia and ride her i trust her. She is the only horse i ever put my back to and wasnt parinoid. |

I don't think you train her wrong or anything. Course if you let someone else start riding her and stuff, that person would have to learn your method of working with the horse because the horse has been freestyle-taught by you. Actually I've been wondering about that too... cuz I've always wanted to train a horse from a foal and train them the way I want... but some things you have to watch out for such as what you said about the trailer thing-- sometimes they won't let anyone work with them but you because they feel so attached to you. And you have to watch out for people who try to put their own training on your horse (for instance my horse is only voice-command trained, so I always make sure I tell people not to click or kiss at her because she won't respond!).

Wow you sound quite the team Do you mean whats next other than ridden training (playing with the gaits, transitions, etc)? Might be worth socializing her to other people doing floating with her (in case of emergancy)? Good luck .. sounds like you guys are going great!

Well if you want to do endurance with her, then what I would suggest is start getting her in shape, mentally and physically, for her new career. Get her going forward, between your legs, walk trot canter, with smooth transitions, and rate. Get her thinking about bending and moving off your leg and putting sequences of moves together, as in a serpentine or figure eight. You can add some strength/conditioning exercises, like rollback, spiral in spiral out, etc. p.s. I don't beleive a 15.1h horse is "too small" for a 5'7" rider, by any means.

I don't see why you can't jump her. Plenty of arabs jump and most of them are not 16.2+ hands. Maybe she wont be short listed for the olympics but, there is no reason you can't jump her.

YEAH!! Great job. Sounds like you have a really REALLY broke horse because of the things you have taken the time to do with her. So now that she has a SOLID foundation the possibilities are endless as to where you go from here. I'm sure your horse will excel in whichever discipline you choose to train her in. GREAT WORK!!!! I see so many horses who are JUST not TRUELY broke. Sure, they are well trained in one discipline but take them out for a trail ride and they FREAK OUT. I truely believe in getting the horse really really broke to just ride and handle situations with a grain of salt BEFORE ever training for a certain discipline. I think a solid foundation is a wonderful thing to have to build from. Good luck with your mare, I'm sure she will be great at whatever her job ends up being! |

"I don't beleive a 15.1h horse is "too small" for a 5'7" rider, by any means." Thant makes me feel alot better!! For endurance we can trot 14miles no sweat already. With alittle cantering. This is hilly and straights. She loves it too. i am currently working with her to find a more confortable trot thats easy for me and her. Lol my poor old bridle FINALLY snapped yesterday while i was cleanning it. So i am going to ride her with a halter to the tack shop today ill let you know if im still alive. JK she goes fine bareback i just like having a bridle for the unexspected. Im taking my saddle cuz i wanna ride more then just to the tack shop. thanks alot guys | |
