Some mares show in as little as a couple of months, some mares don't show till the foal hit's the ground There are no hard and fast rules on pregger mares. Makes raising babies so much fun.

haha, thats no good! I do even have a friend that was 5 1/2 months along before she found out she was pregnant! so i guess it's same for horses, it's possible you wont even know! but how not fair, i guess she'll just surprise me either way!

Do you have her breeding dates? Has she been checked by a vet?

well see... shes a rescue, she was rescued in august of '07 and she was pastured with a mini stud, so when the previous owner took her from them, b/c she was skinny and not well taken care of, he said it was possible she was pregnant, and i just got her a lil less than a week ago, and we had a vet out the day we brought her home, he did a regular vet check on her, to make sure she was healthy, and gave her shots and all, but like i said.. he didn't bring anything to check her about her baby, and didn't say much, he said he could come back in a month and do a blood test (which i dont know anything about that) but he wasn't much help when i asked him if he though she was pregnant...

oh boy! I'm glad she's with someone like you now and out of a bad situation. Good for you. I understand why you don't really know what's going on with her now. And palpating or U/S on a mini is almost impossible.

Do you know if this would be her first foal or not? Usually, if it is not the first, then they will blossom and bag sooner than a maiden. Let's see, out with the "stud" till August means that her latest possible due date is sometime in July, but if she was pastured with him for all that year, she could go anytime, LOL. Gee, I'm not much help, am I? LOL.

haha, i dont think it's possible to be completly sure now! I can find out if shes foaled before, but I havnt asked, so truthfuly I have absolutely no idea. shes the first horse i've rescued and i'm so happy about it, at first i was scared about it, but i've had her less than a week and shes showing so much improvment in the way she looks, and is acting/moving around! also shes appox 15 years old, so it's really possible that shes been bred before.

Chieflastables heres some idea if it helps

udders develope - 2-6 wks
milk fills bag - 4-6 wks
oozing/waxing - 1-2 days prior
pelvic region relaxes- last 7-14 days
vulva relaxes in final days
This is not etched in stone but guidelines. When the foals cooked it comes. Good luck keep in touch with updates
