What makes a Buckskin a true Buckskin?

I always thought that anything with the /black/tan markings would be a buckskin.
Not so.
There are variables. If it has a dorsal stripe or as some I believe call it line back? These are not buckskins. Are they then called dunskins?

And what about white on a buckskin without the stripe but has the black/tan markings?

Enlighten me please.

A buckskin is the result of one cream gene acting on a bay. Therefore it lightens the body, but the points stay the same.
A dun (the actual dilution, like the cream gene), however, is a dilution or color modifier that works on reds and blacks. It lightens the body, but the points stay basically the same base color, only instead of gradually turning into the color of the body, they have the tiger stripes and dorsal stripe and other darker markings.

Hope that helps!

At the very least it's a buckskin

Don't confuse a true dorsal stripe, which is very sharply edged and runs from the mane though the tail and MUST exist in a dun, with countershading, which has fuzzy edges and doesn't usually run from mane though tale. Many bays (therefor buckskins) and chestnuts have countershading. But yes, if a bay horse has 1 dilute and 1 or 2 dun genes, then he is a dunskin.

What do you mean by white? White stockings? White spots? That would just be the addition of Overo, Tobiano, or Sabino. You can have a buckskin who has white legs that extend far enough up to totally cover all the black he would normally have, but his mane and tail would still be black. You can have a bucskin who is a maximally expressed Sabino, therefore all white, and you'd have to verify his true color either by DNA or his parents colors if they are genetically known to be such that the only thing they can produce is buckskin.

there is a lot of good info on the buckskin registery page as well, you might find that helpful.
