The sport is getting better. I see less peanut rollers and less 4-beat lopes that look like the horse is hitching lame in the bigger breed shows. On our local circuit it's still bad though. We affectionately call is Western Dis-Pleasure. Most of the horse shown locally just aren't built for the slow collected gaits and they almost look in pain to be going that slow. Plus the gaits aren't true and look just horrid! So, if you want to try WP, have a good qualified trainer evaluate your horse to see if he/she can make a go at it. It takes the right conformation and ability to be able to really pull off a nice Western Pleasure jog and lope without it looking stiff and forced. ~Barb

I agree that WP is improving, but there is still a long way to go. Pretty much gone are the days of peanut rollers and lame horses but some breeders still emphasize poor conformation in order to achieve super slow gaits.
