My trainer told me on Saturday to lunge my horse in the round pen (with out the lunge line) for only about 20 minutes 3 or 4 x a week. But my problem is that she wants me to take the reins and take them between his front legs, and then bring them up and tie them together in a bow by the saddle horn, what is this called? and I don't think I'm doing it right, it looks weird, and my horse is like HUH? I'm afraid he is going to get hurt, so I stopped until I figure out the right way.

like, lol i'm trying to find the best way to explain this... well i take the reins put them between his front legs, take one rein to each side, and bring them up to where the saddle horn is, not tieing to the saddle horn, and then tie them together. I think it was to get him to keep his head down...?

It used to keep the horse head down and nose in. If you havent done it before, I would recommend you NOT doing it without supervision. It can be dangerous if it is to tight or to lose.

Did she tell you why she wanted you to do it?

There was a thread about this a while back- I forget the term for that contraption, but its like lunging in draw reins. My take is it is dangerous; I wouldnt do it. Im not a fan of the whole concept. Sounds like a shortcut. Oh yeah- if the horse trips, he could get seriously hurt, b/c he cant get his head up to counteract/react. Dont do it.
