Looks a lot better.

I had a maiden mare bag up all strange like that once. She ended up with a huge udder and milk veins all the way to her front legs! Freaked me out, as I had never seen anything like it before!!! I was glad the maiden had milk, though as my other maiden hardly had any! *wink*

I would imagine the red is probably from where that strange udder was rubbing on her leg when she was walking around. I'm no expert, though!

Good luck & here's hoping for a safe, healthy foaling!!!

Last night Lacy found an expert on the internet. Mega years in foaling - breeding etc... both of us sent her a question and she was kind enough to reply.
I also extended an invitation to join us here.... so we will see if she does, she says time is a minimum for her. But I sent her a link to this thread and here is what she says.

Hi Peg,

I looked at the pictures of your mare's udder. It is pretty bizarre looking! I have seen mares whose udders have developed in much the same way but not quite to such an extent. Has the mare had foals before? I expect that it is fine and "normal" for her. Things to look for would be heat and pain. As long as there is no heat or pain, she most likely doesn't have mastitis, which would be the first concern. Just keep a watch on her and if either of those symptoms develops, let your vet know. I think her udder will go ahead and develop to look more normal.

Let me know how she does! I would be happy to help any of your members in any way I can.

That bold area put my mind at ease, cause she is on her way. I am out the door now to see what it looks like today.

Peg the mare I had that foal last year did the same thing and hers stayed back until the baby was born.. my vet told me the same thing to just keep an eye on it and that as long as it was not hot or painful to not worry.

Peg- you forgot to mention how nice she was I have emailed sites like that before with no reply for days- or maybe even never. I was amazed and very happy that she replied so quick... Now, I have respect for her

I hope she does join, she seems very knowledgeable- I think her and Repo could get into some convo's. I think we could all benefit from her expertise.

Yeah… PeggySue... where have you been??? Haven’t seen you lately- but, I haven’t seen much except for textbooks and the computer screen either... I don’t even think I’ve been able to find the back of my eye lids for the past few weeks God I can’t wait till graduation! Then I will run as far as my little stubby legs will take me ... and hopefully not fall flat on my face
