I too would have the vet look at her. My mares have never gotten that big in that area of their udder. Just to save you worry/ and possible problems down the road I would recomend having her look at, it just dont look/feel right.

Id get the vet out and just see what he has to say. I dont remember anything like that from my grandparents horses- but like it was said, maybe that will be normal for her.

But since youve never bred her before I would get the vet out just in case something is going on.

My bet says a clogged something or other. The red spot- is that just the picture? Is it warmer then the rest or look swollen to you?? Does it have the same texture as the rest??

I personaly think that it is just a maiden mare getting udder development, I have had mares begin in front others from behind first some develope one side then the other, and it looks like a mare who was laying down and may have had pressure against vessels in that udder which cause the pink and some swelling. but it does not concern me. as for the dates. some mares (maidens) develop earlier, some later here is a picture of my maiden mare she is due at the same time as this mare.

Peg, if this is an Immaculate Conception... I will need to move it to the religious forum....

Good luck Peg, I hope it is simply a newbie Mom-to-be issue.

It may be that.
Where is BW?
I told the vet on the phone about this and she said not to worry.
Take her temp and if she is eating and all the plumbing is working and her temp is not above 102, then we need to do something.

Something about ademia (sp) she said once this mares foals all hormones kick in and it will go to the bag............. it still makes me leery though.
*goes to find Michelle*
