In general the Shire breed is the tallest horse breed. But individual horses of other breeds can get bigger...

The largest "breed" of horse is the shire. On averege, shires are taller than any other breed.

However, the largest/tallest individual horse is not a shire.

Do taller horses tend to have more health problems?

biggest horse

braveheartcrazy is right> Sampson is the biggest in the record books. Doesnt the Shire run the biggest of the drafts and the belgian runs the smallest? At least that is what I had learned.....

I heard today that larger horses tend to not live as long as smaller horses, but that may just be hearsay.

it seems to be true. Ponies and tough smaller horse breeds like arabs and quarter horses frequently live (and even WORK) well into their 30's and even 40s while its rare for a draft to get over 20. A larger body mass puts more strain on - everything.

Shires tend to be the tallest breed. Belgians and brabants would have the most bone or density (thickest of the drafts)

Right now the tallest living horse is Radar,a belgian.

They do not have any more health problems, but they are just a lot more expensive.

They also do not have shorter life spans than a regular 'light' horse. you can't compare them to ponies, because ponies seem to have an extremely long life.

But then what are ponies if not small horses?

I have just always heard that ponies seem to have an incredibly long life span. Ponies just seem to be very hardy. Mine is at least 29-33, and is not showing any signs of slowing down. he is still ridden regularly, never shows any signs (other than teeth) of age induced illnesses.

they do sometimes have a longer lifespan on average than larger horses, but there are exceptions as there are with larger breeds not having pony life spans. Both stock breeds and arabians can also live for an exceptionally long time.
