Join up

A join up is the moment between horse and owner/rider when they have showed one another that they trust each other.

A person sends the horse around in a circle looking straight at its eye with your eyes (like a mt lion would (predator)) Keep shoulders square like you want to bite your horses head off. Sending the horse forward. With a lead rope/ lounge whip. Do calm throws of the rope or swing the line of the whip after the horse keep him in a canter or fast trot.

First sign is his ear coming towards you. You will see he is listening. Continue to erg him forward.
Second sign is licking and chewing. Sometimes popping their lips. Still continue to erg forward.
Third sign is them dropping there head in a calmly manner not swing and throwing their head that doesnt count. Keep them going forward untill they have lowered their head (submit) they may even get closer (come in your space a bit)
Then turn you back look directly at the ground with shoulds slumped. If the horse continues to go around you must keep your back to them untill they stop. When they stop concentrate on the ground or even your shoe. This is the most fustrating step (in my opinion) then they will come up to you. DO NOT TURN AROUND until their nose is 1ft away from your back. Then you may turn and rub them between the eyes. Then walk away and see if they follow.

By this point if you did it right they will even if you back up they should back up with you. it is the closest thing to respect as you can get.

Remember patients!

hope that helps

At one time it was a bit of a test to see if your training was doing ok. Then along came some clinics where it was used as a way to impress the crowd. The better it looked the more sales in specialized equipment.

I've only heard of it through the Heartland books. But honestly, if I had a horse, I'd try it x] I think it sounds like a great way to establish trust between horse and human. Of course, it probably isn't as simple as the Heartland books - it'd probably take a few join-up sessions rather than one. But I think it is a valid technique, just like t-touch. I don't think Monty Roberts invented join-up? He's just a person who has marketed it I would guess.

Here: http://www.montyroberts.com/ and http://www.wikihow.com/Join-Up-With-a-Horse may be helpful...

Although, I would be careful, maybe get somebody who has done it before to give you some pointers from the sidelines at first. Because I think if you make some mistakes it can all go awfully wrong and you'll go backwards rather than progress anywhere.

I have done some similar work such as 'Join Up' with my yearling. We do lots of groundwork. After each session, I send him away. If he chooses not to come back, I send him off and when he comes in willingly, licking chewing, and comes to me, I give him a pat and we are done. We share a very close bond and I just adore him. My 25 yr old QH however, does not care for this type of thing ....

LOL!

I know - my mare doesn't really join up either, but she is very respectful of me in the round pen.

hehe, My old man won't even GO into the roundpen .. (it has a bottom and top bar). It is in one of my pastures and open, so they can come and go and graze in there. My yearling goes in all the time. My old man went in ONCE and got 'stuck'. He was too scared to come out .... feed time came around and he is running around there going 'OMG OMG let me out' .. even though the gate was wide open ... after about 10 minutes he ran through the gate as fast as possible and now refuses to go in on his own .. silly boy!!
