Question What information should I get from the previous owner

Hi Everyone,

I am not sure where to post this question so I opted for here.

I am purchasing a purebred Appaloosa - I have paid her deposit and will be purchasing her completely the first of the month. I would gladly have paid for her outright but the owner wants to do some work with her before I buy her and during the 30 days I am also working with my horse and the breeder/trainer.

When we exchange funds and paperwork what are all the things I should expect or need in order to register the horse - as well as background information and what questions should I ask?

Help?

Patty

What do you mean by "purebred" Appaloosa? 8 generations of straight Appaloosa ancestors? Or one that is registered with ApHC (or one of the other 'App' registries)?

You should get her registration papers with the current owner (the one you are buying from) listed on them as current owner along with a signed "Transfer Report". Depending on where you are, paperwork to get a brand inspection in your name, current Coggins. Info about the current shot status and de-worming ihistory. You will need to join the registry to transfer to your name. If she's ApHC call them (1-208-882-5578)(www.appaloosa.com) and talk with them - they are very helpful and courteous.

Ask the sellers if they have any pictures of her as a young horse - not important but nice to have. (After I got Doe I contacted his breeder [not who I got him from] and they sent me a picture of him at 10 days old and pictures of his sire and dam.)

If she isn't already registered then you will need more paperwork (and depending on age - more expensive) but ApHC will help you.

Congratulations on getting an App! What is her name/color/pattern/bloodlines? Pictures.

Vet check her.

Have you seen her papers? Do you know her pedigree?

Is she UTD on everything? Shots, Worming, Hoof Care, etc.

What exactly is doing with your soon to be horse for this whole month?

Hi,

I believe from what she said she is 8 generations back - I will double check to ensure - here is a pic....

Her name is Midnight Autumn. She has a small white spot on her forehead, and three white spots on her heels.

Sire: Blazing Scotch
Dam: My Sweet Mint

Yes, I think she said she had some baby pictures of her as well. I have other photos in my gallery.

Thanks for the input.

Patty

Sorry to tell you but she doesn't have 8 generations of Appaloosa. Here's her pedigree.

Are you sure that she is registered? I don't find her info on the ApHC website.

Kicks about covered it. If she is not registered yet it is going to be very expensive to do so (if you can get the breeders cert). And since she is not colored you will need to be a performance permit if you want to show.

ETA: She is very pretty!

From what Allbreed Pedigree shows she's definately not 8 generation straight App - lot of AQHA there including her sire's sire. Called ApHC and they say that the only paperwork they have on her is her DNA (parent verification) on file but no registration forms yet. As an NC she will have to get a Preformance Permit to show in ApHC shows. There are newer rules on breeding NC's and rather their foals are eligle for registry but I'm not real sure what they are - my 2 mares carry full papers - 1 is 5 generation straight App, the other isn't - she's 1/4 App; 1/4 Arabian; 1/4 TB; 1/4 AQHA in her Gparents' generation.

Ah thanks - for all the information. I know the owner/breeder has her paperwork. I will definately ask more questions about her. I do know that when I talked with ApHC via email they sent me a list of informtion to go over with the owner.

I am not interested at this point in showing her, but again thanks for all the information on her.

I am not familiar with Appaloosa's as this is the first one I am personally dealing with. So, I don't know much about the breed or their make up / combonation, etc.

TYMACS GIRL -

During this month while the owner is working with her she walks/trots and does lope however she is off on her lead with the lope.

Additionally, because Autumn is still in many areas "green" and it has been awhile since I have been on horses. I am working on refreshing my skills on school horses at the barn and I ride Autumn a couple times a week working with the trainer - so it is more like a joint team effort in buying her.

I am going to the barn tomorrow so I will be sure to ask questions.

Thanks again!

Lots of Registered Appaloosas have outcrosses in their history, AQHA, TB and even Arab. Don't worry about that, just get the paperwork to register her.

I think it sounds like the seller is open and working with you and eager for this whole relationship to work out, so the most important thing I'd get from her is her phone number and permission to call and ask questions if things come up that you think she would know or could help with about her down the road.
