Well I really only have one question: I know that the cold weather can make horses frisky, but can it make the horse totally crazy? I ask this because Trix is being such a BRAT X10000000 she is rearing more then 5 times everytime I ride her she is bucking like a mad woman. When I tap her with the crop on the butt when she is not responding the first couple times I ask her to do something she bucks even with the littlest of smacks on the butt. She is just not a fun horse to ride anymore! I know it's not pain in her back because I have had the vet out already to give her a check up. And her tack is fine, but I am wondering if she has a toothache? She is eating perfectly fine, she eats her carrots, no chewing to the side at all. I just don't get it! So can the weather really make a semi-good (lol) horse go super bad and rotten?

I don't know, but every winter my mare in Germany would get like that, where we couldn't ride her unless we just galloped her around letting her get the bucks out first....

Where are you? Fall grass, just like Spring grass, can be very high in sugars, and all that sugar can make some horses Looney Tunes.

Is she getting turned out everyday, or is she being stalled for most of the day? Cathy

A couple of years ago I wouldn't have dared to ride my mare in winter unless it was just at a walk and not very far vecause she would go nuts because she felt good... but now she's calmed down a whole lot... so I'm thinking that, if your horse is young, it may be age-related... it seems that with my mare, the older she got, the calmer she became.

I know how you feel. My geldings a nut. Period. No hot feed, daily 12 hour turnout, and a six day a week schedule of heavy work-if he's given off more than one day he is just a maniac. Usually it goes something like; him; can i go? pleasepleasepleaseplease me; No, you need to trot nicely. him; okay. holding it in. holding it in, energy brimming, boiling. OMG I'MA EXPLODE IF I DON'T GO FAST. That's when he goes every which way physically possible. Then when I bring him back and make him slow down and work he starts getting PO'ed, grunting, squealing, etc., etc. Lunging isn't even really enough for him, I have to turn him loose in the arena and let him rip around. Try something like that or some simple exercises to get her head back.

Whoa, flashback! Thats how one of my horse's were. Horrible in the winter. Hated it. 3 winters later, I ended up selling. One thing who worked for me, don't hold him back. It just made it worse. Let him go. (For me atleast) Lots of times when I went to get on, I started to put my foot in the stirrup, he reared, and took off bucking. Once I got on, I would just lope him off.

I guess I should feel lucky that a few of my horses are the opposite and are being lazy as heck
