Question What happens to stolen horses?

Got to thinking...I know, dangerous!

Anyway, why would someone steal a horse? Then, what happens to the stolen ones?

Typically they get sold to auction for meat.

Yes, like ureventer89 said and some are sold off as riding horses.

www.netposse.com has some of the stories of stolen and lost horses.

or, if they are good show horses, that don't need registration papers, they might be shipped to another part of the country to be shown...Cathy

Most get sold at auctions and end up at the slaughter pens. People who steal horses usually want a quick buck and want to get the horses out of their hands as quickly as possible. If you're horse gets stolen phone all the horse slaughter houses and give a description of your horse. If it has a micro chip they will scan all the horses fitting the description. Also, the ones up here will keep all those horses aside and let you come look at them to see if any are your horse.

Some are found and returned to owners.
Some are sold to other people in some other part of the country.
Some even get false registration papers (from a horse whose marking match but is hopelessly unsound or has even died) and are resold.
Some are sold at auction.
Some end up with the meat buyers.

I know the answer. People in my town buy them and floats.

A friend of mine bought a thorougbred. He was a lovely horse. Then the police came and said he was stolen. She had bought him from someone in town. He had got it from his uncle. I am not sure how the uncle had come to have him. He had been sold or given because of unpaid training fees. Then the fella who had him originally decided to list him as stolen. He said that he had promised it to his daughter for a hack. Last we heard they were flogging the poor old fella at the race tracks again. He was never a good race horse to start with. We could never work out how this worked because he was given the horse back, she got her money back but the trainer never did.

Another person I know bought a float/trailer. Then it was listed as stolen. The person she bought it from had just forgotten to ever pay the person from whom she had bought it. They worked it out between original owner and final purchaser where the owner got the money.

Life can be very interesting in a country town.
